Relay for Life Overview

(As given in the Relay For Life Participation Packet)

The American Cancer Society Relay for Life is a unique, challenging, and fun way to raise money for the American Cancer Society in any community, large or small--and to raise the awareness of cancer and the work of the American Cancer Society. Relay For Life is a celebration!

Relay For Life was started by Dr. Gordon Klatt in Tacoma, Washington, in 1985, when he got the idea to walk and run around the Tacoma Bowl for 24 hours to raise money to fight cancer. He raised $27,000 for the American Cancer Society that year. In 1992, Relay became the signature event for the American Cancer Society. This celebration is more than a fund-raiser; it's an event that reaches into the community to bring friends, neighbors, work associates, and families together to celebrate those who have survived cancer and to remember those who have not.

The Relay For Life involves teams of participants who try to raise as much money as they can. They compete against each other and other teams to see who can raise the most money. Teams are comprised of participants from corporations, hospitals, civic groups, clubs, and families. The team registration fee is $100. We recommend that you invite 8 to 15 people to be on your team. Each person will receive an event T-shirt. Organizations may have more than one team.

Relay is an overnight event. Each team should have at least one team member on the track, walking, jogging, or running, or strolling for the duration of the Relay. Your team captain has a sign-up sheet for allocation of times that a team member should be on the track (usually 30 minutes per participant). Each team is encouraged to have a "theme" at your campsite. Awards will be presented in a variety of categories. It has been our experience that there is a tremendous amount of fun for campers.

Thank you for your interest!
