Indian River Lagoon facts... |
| The Indian River Lagoon is a 156 mile-long estuary located along central Florida's east coast. It is the most biologically diverse ecosystem in North America. This spectacular diversity occurs because its climate type is sub-tropical to the north and warm-temperate to the south. Over 4,000 species of plants and animals make their home in the watershed. Approximately 2,200 marine animal species have been identified in the lagoon system including manatees, dolphins, sea turtles and seahorses. Of these, over 30 species are listed as threatened or endangered. The biodiversity of the crabs and shrimp that live in burrows in the sediments is higher in the Indian River Lagoon than any other temperate estuary on earth. The unique conditions of the Indian River Lagoon provide the specific habitat that is necessary for seagrass to flourish. Just one acre of seagrass can provide shelter for 40,000 fish and 50,000,000 invertebrates. This seagrass is also responsible for the recycling of nutrients that supports much of Florida's Fisheries. The Indian River Lagoon is one of the most popular destinations for recreational anglers in the State of Florida. The economic value of recreational fishing and commercial shellfish in the Indian River lagoon is worth over $352 million per year. Its four primary sportfish species are the red drum, spotted sea trout, snook and tarpon. |
