Katy's Story
Updated January 13, 2004

I was diagnosed a couple of weeks ago with a subchorionic hematoma. At approx. 11 weeks, I had heavy red bleeding. I thought for sure I was losing the baby. My husband and I went to the hospital ER. My cervix was closed, the bleeding had slowed, and the ultrasound showed a very active baby. My doctor said let's just wait and see, put me on bedrest. A week later, I had another heavy red bleed. Again, bedrest and let's wait and see. I was dying for more information. Robin, that's when I found your site. It was so comforting to read the experiences of others who knew exactly what I was going through.

I have three children, all of whom were conceived through infertility treatments. I have a boy, just about to turn 4, and 15 month old twins (boy and girl). With all of the problems we had conceiving our kids, we didn't think we could get pregnant on our own. Surprise! That really makes us think that this baby is meant to be. Needless to say, bedrest is extremely difficult. My very supportive husband has pretty much taken over with everything. It is very hard for me to refrain, but I've been doing pretty good. I work part-time as an elementary school counselor, and school starts next week. I feel as if I have no choice but to work. My husband is presently laid off. He is a construction electrician.

It has been four days since my last bleeding episode, and I am presently spotting brown. I hope that's a good sign. I have an ultrasound scheduled in a couple of weeks. For now, I'm holding at approximately 13 weeks. I pray for all of you. And Robin and Joey, I'm so sorry for your loss, and thankful that you chose to share it with others.

Update! January 13, 2004 – 34 weeks

I just wanted to give an update. I have received some e-mails from a few of you. Thank you for your thoughtfulness. I have great news!!! I had an ultrasound at approx. 20 weeks, and they found no evidence of the sch!!! I questioned her and questioned her (are you really sure???). I was assured that the hemmorhage was gone. The doctor said that I should still be careful, because it could come back, but for now things look good and the baby is healthy and growing right on track. By the way, it's another boy. That will make three boys and one girl. I am presently starting my 34th week. I had some other problems in between. I was leaking some amniotic fluid, so I am tested at the hospital every week to make sure I'm not leaking anymore and for non-stress tests. Since we are 34 weeks along, we feel pretty comfortable. If the baby were born today, more than likely everything would be okay. Having a subchorionic hematoma is just so unpredictable. Hang in there everyone. I hope my story gives you some hope. I will let you know when the big day happens. Thoughts and prayers,

~ Katy
