Generation No. 3

JOHN3 MARTIN (JOHN2 MARTYN/MARTIN, EDWARD1 MARTYN)1 was born March 15, 1674 in Swansea, MA2, and died November 3, 1757 in Swansea, MA3,4. He married (1) MERCY HAYWARD 1701 in Rehoboth, MA5. He married (2) MERCY THURBER April 4, 1713 in Rehoboth, MA6,7.

Notes for JOHN MARTIN:

Vital records state date of death at 1759.
He was of Rock River when he married Marcy Thurber and is not the John Martin of Rehoboth who married Mercy Billington.
He resided in in Rehoboth, MA after his marriage where he resided until 1728 at which time he removed to Swansea where he died.

There is a Martin House in Rehoboth that is a museum. It was built in 1728 by our John Martin's son, John. This plot of land had been the site of a previous house of our John Martyn /Martin that was burned by the Native Americans at the beginning of King Phillip's War. Our John passed it to his son John. The farm originally included 100 acres of land. The Martin House is now closed due to lack of funds to keep it open. In this house is John Martyn/Martin's Bible and a staff he brought over from England.

In one genealogical piece about the staff  it states:: "He supposedly designated that it was to go from 1st son to 1st son. However, when his first son Malatiah died and Malatiah's first son, Daniel, was very ill, Hannah, Malatiah's wife changed the tradition."
In the Snow-Estes Ancestry: The "staff which he willed to his son John, was also owned by Mr. Delancey Martin, but is now in The Martin House; it is a malacca stick, with an ivory head and silver band, on which is engraved the following monogram and date, "MM. 1728"." So this is open to wondering if it did indeed go to Malatiah and he put the date and initials on it. As John was dead before 1728. Further research should be done on this.
