Occupation Pastor for the Bethelem church for 30 years Religion: Primitive Baptist. In 1839-40 the family moved from Callaway County to DeKalb County with the Thorntons, DeShazers, Adams and others. He started the Bethlehem Church in Clarksdale in 1842 and became the first minister of any denomination in the county. He was ordained in 1845. THe church closed in 1867 with differences and conflicts as the result of the Civil War. The Salem Church was organized a few years later. Jeremia's funeral was the last held in the church. All three of this preacher's daughters married their first cousins in the William Thornton family. On the land jointly owned by Jesse, Thornton and Wm Adams the first school house in the county was erected. It was built and used until 1854.

Elder Jesse Todd, son of Peter and Hannah Todd was born in NC and came to DeKalb Co, in 1839. He was ordained a minister in 1845 and served the Bethlehem Church for about 30 years. This was when DeKalb was a part of Clinton Co. The first school house in the county was erected on the corner of land belonging to Jesse Todd, W. M. Thornton, and W. M. Adams. It was erected in the 40's for school and church purposes and was used until 1854. These three men made entries in Twp. 57 R. 33 between 1836 and 1841 and were owners of real estate when the county was organized in 1845.

The Todd Family Cemetery was located on Jesse Todd's land-SEC. 11 T 57 R 33. Stones have fallen and brush has grown up obliterating unmarked graves.
