From the New York Times, December 27, 1987:

Manson Rumor Is Checked In Fromme's Prison Escape

Associated Press

Prison officials were trying to find out today why Lynette (Squeaky) Fromme fled the Federal Correctional Institution for Women on Wednesday after she had rejected parole hearings and quietly served 12 years of her life sentence for trying to kill President Ford.

The authorities said they were checking telephone records to determine if Miss Fromme told friends before her escape that she had heard an unconfirmed rumor that her close associate, Charles M. Manson, was dying of cancer and that she was desperate to see him. He is serving a life sentence in California for his role in the 1969 murders of the actress Sharon Tate and six other people.

"It's a possibility that she called them," said Maureen Atwood, associate warden of the Alderson prison, referring to Manson sympathizers. It would take about two days to check phone records, she added.

Miss Fromme fled Wednesday night and was recaptured Friday about two miles from the prison.

There was no confirmation from California officials on Mr. Manson's health. Miss Fromme was permitted to correspond with him about five years ago, prison officials said.
