Mother's Reflections

(This paper was written for an English class by my mother, Eula Spivey Springer,
while she was a student at Chattanooga High School.)

"Reflections"
(Playing ~ an oldie entitled "Memories")

"How time flies ! It seems such a few years ago that I was a small child.
From one Christmas to another seemed ages; now they come all too fast.
I used to dream and plan the toys I wanted Santa to bring me. Once
I asked my mother if she thought Santa would find a note if I should put it
in a certain place. "Of course he would," was her reply. Birthdays seemed
never to come; now they pass with increasing rapidity.

"My father and mother were wonderful parents. I wish I had appreciated them
more during the early years, but I guess we're all like that; we don't value
our good fortune while we have it. My father was a quiet, studious sort
of person, many years my mother's senior. How I would love to talk to him now;
what good advice he could give me on the perplexities we have to face each day.
My mother had more education than Father, but she didn't help us
as he did with our homework. He would work for hours on
a mathematical problem, if he couldn't solve it sooner.

"What happy times we used to have ~ my sister, my brothers and I.
Once we lived in the country. We had acres and acres of fields and woods
in which to romp and play. There was a hill set with long, even rows
of long-leaf pines. How we loved to explore their cool, shady depths.
In the Fall we would slide on the beds of slick pine needles.

"Now the months are so short. Christmases fly by;
it's Spring, Summer and then Fall."

~~~
I have her original paper. I was pleased to note the teacher's comments in red:
"good" ~ "true" ~ "good ending."
Mother attended Chattanooga High School, but did not finish when she was high-school age.
After my brother, my sister and I were all in grammar school, Mother went back
to Chattanooga High, and I believe this paper was written at that time. To me,
some of the insights seem slightly mature for a young girl, and the paper was not dated.
