Pompeii sprawls at the foot of Mount Vesuvius. The eruption in 79 AD destroyed the town.

It was buried in stones and ash. It laid undiscovered until the 17th century. Pompeii was frozen in time. For all those years it had remained untouched. People were beginning to believe the ancient city had been a myth. Even though they had written documents that referred to the eruption and destruction of the city.

In 1748 excavation began, revealing a city frozen in time. Temples, markets, storefronts and homes tell the story of this thriving community. |

The
bath houses are elaborately built. They were a gathering place for
the citizens. There is a "new" bathhouse at the Marina
gate that is now being open to visitors.
The excavations continue. There is more to be uncovered. |

| All around the city are the remains of walls of homes and businesses. You have the opportunity to inspect the layout of these buildings. Many have frescos and mosaics in tact. If you visit, be sure to buy a map. This was a city of 10,000 people and covers a lot of area. | ![]() |

Museum in downtown Naples.

All around you are reminders of the people who lived and worked within the walls of Pompeii. | |
| This is just one example of the many roads throughout the city. There are larger stones at the crosswalks. They are low enough for carts to pass over, yet high enough to keep pedestrians out of the muck in the streets. | ![]() |
