A HISTORICAL RESEARCH ORGANIZATION is looking for former residents who lived in certain brick apartment buildings in Dorchester, Mattapan, and Roxbury between 1900 and 1950, who can share memories.
They're focusing primarily on the migration of Jewish and Irish-Catholic residents.
Some of their questions are:
What was the residential make-up of apartment buildings, did many different nationalities live in them or were certain areas more segregated?
What kind of work did you do? Did you commute into Boston or work in Dorchester/Roxbury/Mattapan area?
Do you remember any interesting facts about how the area developed? Were there well-known developers or builders in the area? Was it common for residents of these apartments to move frequently, and how were these apartments advertised?
Are there any vivid memories of the interior or exterior of the apartment buildings you lived in, specifics about the lobbies or entrances, special features?
What made one apartment more ideal than another when you decided where to live? Did you decide based on price, location, distance to relatives, distance to religious institutions?
