Discover How to Get More Traffic - part 2
Mood:  party time!
Topic: Create + Promote Blogs
As promised, we will provide an article based on WordTracker's Friday list of current top keywords. The Friday list gave Christmas as top searched keyword. You may freely copy the entirety of the following to your website, provided you include the author's name and the link to this webpage.

Christmas Origins

Although scholars are uncertain about the exact date of Christ's birth, December 25 was chosen in 336 CE by the Holy Roman Emperor Constantine, the first Christian emperor.

Eighteen years later, in 354 CE, Liberius, the bishop of Rome, made December 25 official for Christianity and adapted the holiday from a Roman holiday celebrating the birth of the sun.

Due to changing calendars, though, even the year of Christ's birth is unknown. Many scholars attribute the event to 4 BCE.

The December celebration was banned in England and her American colonies in the 17th century by Oliver Cromwell. He was protesting the pagan origins of such Christmas memorabilia as Christmas trees, which the druids worshipped.

Over the course of time, these strict guidelines were beginning to loosen. Sparked by literary works such as "A Christmas Carol," the celebration of Christmas became popular again. Alabama was the first state to make Christmas an official holiday, and by 1907, every contiguous state had a Christmas holiday.

Welcome to "An Internet Marketing Tutorial for the rest of us"! So glad you stopped in! This is the inaugural post for a series we're doing this week to demonstrate how to get more traffic to your website.

The major part of the series will be devoted to keyword marketing. By far the best source for keywords is Wordtracker. They list the top 30 searched terms over the last 48 hours, updated daily. We will post a series of articles based on the top 5 as of Friday. Those terms are no longer in the top 5 but are still in the top 30. You can copy the articles for your own site, as long as you copy the entire article, which includes a backlink to this site.

Looking for work? Visit HotJobs.com

The other part of the series will focus on the many ways we currently use to promote this site. Please help support this site by signing up for Monster or Hotjobs! They have 1000s of great jobs in all levels of expertise! You can post your resume for free and submit it to employers with the click of a mouse!

Search Engines go BETA!!!
Mood:  loud
Topic: Create + Promote Blogs
Gary Price, in the most recent edition of Search Engine Watch, lists links to Beta pages currently being worked on by the top search engines. He openly states that he prefers Tpox.net's Newsrank algorithm, but I find it unsatisfying for blogs. The result of me putting USA Today in a shredder would give me top stories that had more to do with one another. That being said, here is my gut analysis of the betas.

Calling itself "All things Beta," Yahoo proves its point a little too well. Most of the offerings on next.yahoo.com are rehashings of what Yahoo already has or has better versions available elsewhere. Nonetheless, podcasts are the next wave of the future, and you should make sure yours is listed in Yahoo Podcasts. The other thing of interest to we bloggers is the RSS support found in My Web 2.0, a souped-up version of My Yahoo.

I didn't find anything that really interested me at Google Labs, but sandbox.msn.com had a couple of items of note. YIKES!!! The sandbox DOES exist! ;> The Sandbox bills itself as a 1-stop shop to "make the web faster, more organized, and personal." Shoot, I'd marry here if I weren't already taken. Anyway, they have a good Anti-spyware download (still in beta, so beware of upgrades) and Netscan, a wonderful Usenet news reader.

Aol's Betas include a spyzapper download and something they call "1-click fixes" for your computer.

Have a great day, and please check out the following link!

"An Internet Marketing Tutorial..." Goes Global!
Mood:  hug me
Topic: Create + Promote Blogs
Good evening and welcome to An Internet Marketing Tutorial for the rest of us. I just went to Blog Stats at Blog Explosion and clicked the little graph marked Site Stats.

Come to find out, in the past week alone this blog has received visitors from virtually every time zone in the world, except for a few in Africa and East Asia. So I want to wish a hearty welcome to all our international friends.

The breakdown it gave me of the languages my visitors speak was enlightening, too. Besides English, our visitors speak French, German, Dutch, Danish, Malay and Taiwanese. For you I have included the translation capabilities of Babel Fish by Altavista. Just click the flag of the country you are from and the page will be translated for you into your native tongue. I've tested it and it works very well.

What to do when your XP Freezes
Mood:  chillin'
Topic: Create + Promote Blogs
If you are promoting your blog in any of the traditional methods, such as by auto- or manual surf exchanges, or you accidentally open an email from a spammer, you probably have some spyware or adware residing in your PC, giving you pop-ups at the most inconventient times, and generally slowing down your PC. Courtesy of our friend Fast Eddie at ProgramFiles.com, we have some step-by-step solutions for your slow PC.

1) Run the following free trial spyware and virus scanners:

2) Install the (Beta) Windows Live Security Center

FREE* XBOX 360™ Promotion!

3) Go to Windows Update and select "Custom" to see if there are any Windows patches not automatically downloaded.

4) Run Spyware Doctor. The free version works wonderfully.

5) Run Registry Mechanic.

Hope these help!

15 Tips to Bring More Traffic to your Blog
Mood:  loud
Topic: Create + Promote Blogs
Today I have a great resource article by Kevin Oorlynck. If we all (including me) do the things he mentions we could have much greater online success.

There are many factors that make blogs much better than normal WebPages including the speed at which blogs are indexed, ability to submit to blog directories & normal directories, pings and track backs. All these little things can help drive more traffic to blogs. Here are 15 popular techniques you can use:

1. Create at least four keyword posts per day. Most of the top blogs such as Boing Boing, Daily Kos, and Instapundit (with literally tens of thousands of visitors per day) publish an average of 30 small 100-150 word posts per day according to "Secrets of the A-list Bloggers: Lots of Short Posts" by TNL.net

2. Submit to My Yahoo! When you submit your own RSS to My Yahoo it is indexed by Yahoo.

3. Submit to Google's Reader. When you submit your own blog RSS to Google's Reader the Google Blog Search will index your site.

4. Add a relevant link directory to your blog and trade links like a demon possessed! Although it may take more time than simply submitting to a search engine one time, this method is perhaps the best way to drive traffic to your site. Use software such as Zeus to speed up the link trading process.

5. Use ping sites like ping-o-matic. Ping your site every time you add a new post. (And be sure to utilize the Daily Ping feature to the right!)

Hate your job? Post your resume on HotJobs.com and find a new one today!

6. Submit your blog to traditional search engines such as AltaVista, and MSN.

7. Submit your blog to traditional directories such as DMOZ. Directories (particularly DMOZ) increase relevance with Google. DMOZ is very picky, but what do you have to lose by trying?

8. Submit to as many RSS Directories and Search Engines as possible. This is a simple but repetitive process that can be done with software such as RSS SUBMIT.

9. Comment on other blogs. Do not just leave short, lazy comments like "I agree." Leave well thought out replies that will force readers to wonder "who wrote this?"

10. Use track backs. If there is a blog that you refer to or quote and it is highly relevant to your subject, leave a track back. It increases your link popularity and may even score a few interested readers from the linked site.

Listen to two FREE audiobooks RISK-FREE from Audible

11. Go offline. Use newspaper ads, public bulletin boards, business cards, even stickers to let as many people as possible know your blog exists.

12. Add a link to your blog in your e-mail signature block.

13. Use Groups (Usenet). Find a relevant group on Google groups, Yahoo groups, MSN groups or any of the thousands of other FREE group services and find like minded people and talk with them. Make sure to use your blog URL like it is your name.

14. Use Forums. Forums are one of the best places to go for advice. Go to forums and find problems to solve. Make sure you leave your blog name, but be tactful about it; some forums get annoyed with those who selfishly drop a few links to their own site and leave.

15. Tag your website. Tagging is a new idea that has erupted across the web. Sites like Del.icio.us, Technorati and many others have a social feature that allows you to place your article under keywords or "tags" that everyone interested in that tag can see.

There is no Christmas in Iraq
Hello and welcome to "An Internet Marketing Tutorial for the rest of us." I hope all of you had a wonderful and joyous Thanksgiving break. In light of the holiday spirit, I would like us to offer some support to our troops in Iraq. Hundreds of thousands of US troops abroad will not get to spend the holidays with their families.

Hence we are teaming up with the American Bible Society to put together gift packages for our troops for Christmas. The gift package includes a Bible, a Christmas Carols CD, and a DVD of the First Noel. You can send a personalized message and even send it to a particular service man or servicewoman. Please help support this great endeavor showing Christmas cheer to our troops by going to ChristmasBibles.com or you can donate by phone, 877THEBIBLE.

How to Get High Rankings without tricks
Mood:  happy
Topic: Create + Promote Blogs
Happy couple of days past Thanksgiving and welcome to "An Internet Marketing Tutorial for the rest of us." Today I'm going to share some of my thoughts/observations on the current state of Search Engine Optimization (SEO).

Jill Whalen, a stay-at-home mom become SEO, has some interesting comments in issue 105 of the High Rankings Advisor. She suggests that if you are doing your own Search Engine Optimizartion (SEO) and you think that your keywords are "in all the right places," then you are essentially sinking yourself. Google, especially after the latest Jagger update, looks for all the SEO tricks; and there is evidence to suggest that the other search engine spiders have similar mechanisms in place. Basically, having keyword phrases peppered all over your site/having a keyword-rich domain will only sink your site several pages deep into the search listings.

Instead, try being creative rather than formulaic. Each page in your site does not necessarily need an H1 header. Instead use header tags as seems natural, when you want to draw your reader's attention to a point.

Additionally, images don't make sense with a keyword phrase in their alt tags. For example, you might have a sight about cycling and you insert alt tags relating to forex (which frequently appears in the "high-paying keyword lists" rogue SEOs try to sell), which has nothing to do with cycling and will probably get your site kicked out of Google. I.e., don't use the alt tags simply for the search engines. Optimize for 2-3 key phrases spread over your entire page in natural positions.

The saying goes, less is more, and that's certainly true when it comes to your web page. A tool I have recently discovered that has helped is the SiteReportCard. It gives a free analysis of your website. Sometimes it can get a little confused about HTML sytax. For instance, I posted simple HTML tags like italic or bold and forget to tell my blog software to post my entry as HTML. What I posted looks fine on screen, but SiteReportCard thinks it is not formatted correctly.

That being said, some of the other comments on my HTML were right on, such as not nesting STYLE elements in the BODY section. I moved a few elements around using my blog builder's advanced customization mode and the only resulatant errors were ones I expected. It does give you a good guide to examining the state of your HTML, though I wouldn't necessarily follow all its warnings. Such a site might appear formulaic to search engine spiders.

Another thing you can do with the HTML to help get high rankings is to remove the whitespace. Having spaces between portions of your code may be appealing to the eye and make your codeeasier to read, but it slows down the speed at which your site loads and results in lower rankings in the search engines. Even in this age of broadband, T1 and T2 connections, the search engines check to see how fast a page would load on dial-up, the lowest common denominator when it comes to connection speed. Plus, web browsers don't recognize the whitespace. If you need to position something on the line below, in HTML use the BR or the P tags. Also, don't use uppercase in your HTML. I did so in my description simply to highlight the code. Uppercase HTML slows down the speed of your page loads, as the browser has to convert it to lowercase first.

Also, reducing the number of images or optimizing them on your site will increase the speed at which it loads and also your rankings. SiteReportCard has an image optimizer as well.

Utilizing these techniques and the others from earlier posts have earned me a top 10 listing for "internet marketing tutorial." I hope these techniques will be beneficial to you as well.

Randy
