The Wringer
The book is about a boy Palmer who wants to fit in so he joins a group of kids that his mother didn't aprove. There is an anual pigeon shoot that raises money for the towns ball fields. Palmer does not want to be a Wringer. A wringer is a ten year old boy that must run out onto the field and wring the necks of the injured pigeons and throw them in green bags. Palmer must be a wringer. He is ten. He then finds a pigeon and calls in Nipper. His friends find out about his pigeon and try to kill it. They torture Palmer and the bird. They would even go to his house to bother him. Palmer couldn't stand the chance that Nipper would get killed so he gave it to his friend Dorothy and told her to let it go at the shore when she went on vacation. She agreed. Later in the book Palmer is being a wringer when Dorothy came. Palmer asked her where she let the bird go. she said in the rail yards. Palmer got mad because that is where they catch the pigeons for the shoot. Later in the shoot a pigeon came out that looked like Nipper and got away. then it came back at landed on Palmers head. Then Beans took the bird off his head and put it in front of the shooter and the shooter shot. Palmer ran and grabbed the injured bird he walked the crowd and they booed him.
