EIGHTH GRADE EXPLORATION: SYSTEMS AND STRUCTURES

This year the eighth grade will have the opportunity to explore an interest of their choice within the realm of any scientific system or structure, whether natural or man-made. The eighth grade will be guided through a project that will develop their understanding and skills within their topic.

Purpose

The purpose of the eighth grade exploration is for students to demonstrate mastery of essential habits and skills necessary to make the transition from middle to high school. Successful completion is necessary for promotion to high school.

What should eighth grade students be able to do?

The eighth grade exploration will provide students with the opportunity to show skills they have mastered. Eighth graders will show mastery in the following areas:

q being curious about scientific topics

q correcting grammar and mechanics

q creating and using a visual aide

q evaluating resources

q finding valid and reliable sources for research

q following directions

q formulating opinions and ideas on the topic they have studied

q goal setting

q interpreting data and information

q investigating scientific topics

q planning how to accomplish a large task and following through with it

q being neat

q organizing materials and thoughts

q presenting information to an audience in a polished manner

q problem solving

q researching

q responding creatively and writing with style

q managing time

writing an interesting, non-fiction, original piece that reflects both application and fact or information

As you know every class preceding yours has had to complete the Eighth Grade Exploration. They have to do the same research, spend the same amount of time or more, and most of all they had to follow the same rules. Its safe to say that they have had suffice experience.
