1. My niece has three dots on the web of her hand. Does this mean anything?

Three dots in a triangle shape generally means "Mi Vida Loca" (My Crazy Life). Three dots can also indicate allegiance to a Sureno gang (the three standing for 13). These dots are usually found on the fingers or knuckles. Often a single dot is found on the opposite hand for the one in 13. (Be sure to check both hands.) Norteno gang members often place one dot on one hand and four on the other for 14. They can also indicate a local gang tattoo.

2. My brother wants to get a tattoo of the "drama mask's", he's not into acting but says that they are "cool". Any ideas?

The drama masks of a smiling face and crying face indicate the emotions in acting. For the gang member they symbolize a philosophy of "Smile now, Cry later." Basically this means do what you want today and worry about the consequences later. But it doesn't alwayz indicate gang activity.

3. My homegirl dresses like a gang member, but insists that she don't belong to a gang. And we live out here in Los Angeles.

Wellz, In L.A. many dress in a "gang style". Then again many dress like it to follow the trend, nahmean? That doesn't exclude her. But that could be the case.

4. I have been seeing "213" tagged around Los Angeles. Is this a new gang?

Gang members in various cities have taken the use of their telephone area code as a geographic description. Some gangs have actually added it to their names, the "415 Crips" in the San Francisco Bay area, for example. And yes, "213" Is known as a gang.

5. What is causing the recent explosion in gangs?

First of all I do not believe that there is a recent explosion of gang activity. That happened in the late 70's and early 80's. What has happened is we have become more aware of it. Examples of three things :

  • A. Parents wanting the best for their children have moved from gang infested areas to the areas that have inexpensive housing. Unfortunately, their gang infested kids took their gang philosophy with them. So instead of gangs being in just a few areas they now infest almost every, if not every, segment of our society.

  • B. The media has made being in a gang, or acting like a gangster, "cool".

  • C. We failed to recognize that gangs draw their members from all fractions of society. There is no magical line or force that keeps "good" kids from being in a gang.

    6. Do you think that clothing/shoe manufacturers really try to exploit gangs?

I'm not too sure myself about this certain topic. I have heard that Nike shoes and the Air Jordan shoes. Their 13th edition of the shoe was clearly marked "XIII," came only in blue and was sold mainly in Southern California. Their 14th edition was clearly marked "XIV," came only in red and was sold mainly in Northern California. Of course Nike claims that there is no gang connection, it is only coincidence. Their failure to acknowledge that XIII/blue is a sureno gang (started in Southern Calif.) marking/color. Or that XIV/red is widely associated with norteno gangs (Northern Calif.) But I can't say for certain.
