At the time he delivered groceries and salt licks/hardware on circuit 6 days a week to the farmers and residents of the area. Lawrence's first job was in the store, $5 for Friday deliveries and all day Saturday + meals. These were not ordinary meals, they were Grandma Bea's special meals, always more than you can eat, with 3 entrees. Among other things I sliced balogna, ground + bagged coffee, sorted shoes and empty bottles, stocked groceries on shelves, disposed of cardboard, ran cash register, weighed fruits, priced groceries, boxed eggs, pumped gasoline and kerosene. Sorted S&H green stamps.Jimmy Klyne and I did have self employment before that, selling leather goods assembled from kits and potholders to Diehl Lake people, which we called Klymor. I may have tried unsuccessfully to sell clay products from our gray clay banks nearby, and where we also had a crystal bank, near the covered bridge. Mort's Store closed 1968 after Grandma died, Grandpa could not see the paperwork, and he moved to AZ. A picture of the store is available on the web since it was in prior years a US post office. Quite alot of squibs are in print regarding various members of the Hall family, which I will later try to document. Suffice to say Google book searches[warning: we may be charged for these before long] of Jesse Hall or the Disciples of Christ will lead to about 10 published books describing Hall Family or their interests. See Pioneer Days in Hubbard by Stough + Curry{Hall's instrumental in beginning iron production 1868}; History of Hubbard Ohio by Rev Drohan of St. Patrick's Church {land North of Cleveland Mahoning RR and East of Main street up to Cornerhouse Church owned by Jesse Hall and Cornelius Dilley}; 1976 National Bicentennial Commemorative Book-Hubbard-Jesse Hall built the Old Stone House at what is now Rte 62 and Chestnut Ridge Rd; it was standing in early 1930's; Marilyn Miller has walked over the old foundation of it. The bicentenniel book has some nice pix of the old Hall estate, presumably Jesse Hall Jr. History of Trumbull & Mahoning Counties by HZ Williams (1882); History of Youngstown & Mahoning Valley Ohio by Joseph Green Butler (1921); Ohio Records & Pioneer Families by Esther W. Powell (2001); Hubbard by Barbara Emch (2005)--Jesse Hall owner of one of the first coal mines in area, also contains a map showing Jesse Hall owner of property at Chestnut Ridge{main st} and Route 7 {Jersey St}. We know Hall owned an iron or steel works in Sharon PA which was sold to Carnegie Mellon and eventually US Steel. A question I have is about John H Hall, Court Clerk in Newton NJ and editor of the Newton Register from about 1820 on-----is this a relative of Jesse's? Who were Jesse Hall 1763-1843 parents and siblings? Although it is stated that Jesse Hall II, who made most of the money, was born in Hubbard, when was this and why would the couple born in 1760 and 1763 wait so long to have children? We don't know without consulting the graveyard or Christian Church documents the birthdates of the older siblings. Is there a missing generation of Jesse Hall's here? Anyone with any more info can always email me at larry.mort@gmail.com. Earl James Mort survived a heart stoppage on 12/26/08 which occurred at his handball club. He was revived by a nurse on the premises and rushed to the Arizona Medical Ctr where he was revvived 4 times & kept 3 days and had a fibrillator installed for electrical jolts when needed. TY God. His survival was, according to the doctors a 99-1 shot. In memory of Pal Chi d 12/21/1988:Pekingese were regarded as manifestation of the legendary Foo Dog that drove away spirits. They were venerated as semi-divine by the Chinese. Commoners had to bow to them; you were punished by death if you stole one, and when an emperor died, his Pekingese were sacrificed so that they could go with him to give protection in the afterlife. In 1860 the Pekingese reached the West. British and French troops over ran the Summer Palace during the Second Opium War. Imperial Guards were ordered to kill the little dogs to prevent them from falling into the hands of the "foreign devils," but five Pekingese survived and were taken to Queen Victoria, who named it appropriately, "Looty." It is from these canine spoils of war that the modern Pekingese is descended. In 1893 the breed was first shown in Britain. It was recognized in the US in 1909.Pal jogged right next to my right foot 5 miles regularly and completed two forty mile walks from Youngstown North Side to Columbiana Firestone Field and back via Y+S tracks. Besides me he had Lucky Luciano an Irish Setter for company.***ASSIZE OF MORT D' ANCESTOR FIRST JURY TRIAL: 3. Clause [d] provides a writ for the situation of heirs concerned here. It utilized a panel of twelve men to answer set questions to determine land tenancy. The ASSIZE OF MORT D'ANCESTOR asked if the deceased had held the land in demesne (in his own hands and not granted out to another) as of fee (heritably), whether the deceased had died since a certain time (at first, since the king's coronation), and whether the claimant was the nearest heir (but not only heir, but an heir who could claim the deceased as father, mother, brother, sister, aunt or uncle). If the panel returned affirmative answers on all these points, the claimant would be put into the tenement; if not, as that the deceased was the grandfather of the claimant even though the claimant was heir, the claimant's case failed. 4. This is the first major (although not the first) use of a sworn panel of men as a normal method of trial in litigation. This sworn panel was not a jury in their parlance, but an assize. The difference, for them, was that a jury concerned only a single point and the single point was determined by pleading. An assize concerned several points, and they were determined at the beginning of the case by the standardized writ. An assize panel could be converted into a jury by pleading. The sworn panel (assize or jury) was different from a modern jury because the panel was supposed to know the answers before they came before the justices: they were not supposed to be, like modern jurors, impartial judges of evidence put before them at trial. * * * Adam Mort, admitted to the Bar 1580, was Chamberlain (Judge) of Chester. Reportedly he was a country banker who loaned money to the King. His son Adam Mort was cavalier mayor of Preston killed with his son defending the city from roundheads. From League of Latham by WH Ainsworth: Preston was stormed by Sir John Seaton, Adam Morte, the loyal mayor, was slain while fighting valiantly against the besiegers. His grave was in the churchyard, and all the prisoners taken to the church were compelled by Sir Thomas Tyldesley to walk past it bareheaded. Not deeming this indignity enough, the guard would willingly have forced them to kneel down at the grave, while some of the townspeople, who revered the memory of the heroic mayor, went still further, and would have shot a score of rebels on the spot. " In losing Adam Morte, we lost the best and bravest man in Preston," remarked a bystander. " He was a staunch Cavalier, and detested a Roundhead as much as he loved the king. He vowed he would never surrender Preston with life, and if the besiegers entered, it should be over his dead body. The first three Parliamentarians who mounted the walls fell by his hand. He could have escaped with his men, but he would not fly. He fought obstinately to the last—wounding a rebel with every blow. Mad with rage against him, they thrust him through with their pikes, and flung his bleeding body from the walls. And here the brave man lies. Shall we not bedew his grave with their blood ? " Had the guard received a look from Sir Thomas Tyldesley they would have complied, but he sternly shook his head. " Adam Morte fell in fair fight," remarked one of the prisoners—a dark-looking Puritan. " Thou art one of those who helped to slay him, Phineas Clay," cried the first speaker. " I deny it not," rejoined Clay. " I glory in the deed. I did good service in removing so bitter a malignant." As the words were uttered a bullet was lodged in the Puritan's brain, and he fell upon Adam Mortens grave. No one knew by whom the shot had been fired. Nor did Sir Thomas Tyldesley care to inquire. * * * * Robert E. MortHERMITAGE, PA. – Robert E. Mort 84, a WWII veteran and a Buhl Day honoree, of 3709 Mt. He was chairman of the Democratic National Committee and a key supporter of Alfred E. Smith's candidacy for President of the United States. After Franklin D. Roosevelt became President, Raskob was a prominent opponent of the New Deal through his support of a number of anti-Roosevelt organizations including the American Liberty League. Raskob was also a leader in the Association Against the Prohibition Amendment. Career He was hired in 1901 by Pierre du Pont as a personal secretary. In 1911, he became assistant treasurer of DuPont, in 1914 treasurer, and in 1918 vice-president for finance of both DuPont and General Motors (Raskob had been an early investor in General Motors and had engineered DuPont's ownership of 43% of GM, purchased from the financially troubled William C. Durant. While with GM, he led the creation of General Motors Acceptance Corporation, the corporation that allowed GM dealers to offer installment credit directly to customers. He also promoted the use of standard financial statistics to measure the performance of different operations within a diversified company, primarily through his associate Donaldson Brown. Raskob was very bullish in the stock market in the 1920s and wrote an article for Ladies Home Journal entitled "Everybody Ought to be Rich." He suggested that every American could become wealthy by investing $15 per week in common stocks. Raskob held the head financial job at both GM and DuPont until 1928, when he resigned from GM in a dispute with chairman Alfred P. Sloan. He had supported Democratic presidential candidate Al Smith in the 1928 election, and Smith invited Raskob to become chairman of the Democratic National Committee. Sloan, a supporter of Herbert Hoover, insisted that Raskob resign either from GM or the DNC. Raskob left GM after the board supported Sloan, sold his GM stock, and used the proceeds to build the Empire State Building. Raskob made Smith president of the Empire State Co., that operated the building, based on a promise to do business together the night that Smith lost the presidential election. Raskob served as chairman of the DNC through 1932. He continued to promote the Smith candidacy as Chairman of the DNC, and to advocate for the adoption of an anti-prohibition policy. Both of these positions were opposed by different factions within the Democratic Party, and in 1932, when Franklin D. Roosevelt won the party's nomination, and the election, Raskob withdrew from politics. He was later involved with the American Liberty League, an anti-New Deal organization active around the time of the 1936 election. Among his long-time achievements, John J. Raskob is well known in the Claymont and Wilmington Delaware areas for building the "Patio" at what is now Archmere Academy in the late 1920s. The Patio was originally his residence, and one of its most significant features is a fountain made of marble, which has each of his 13 children sculpted around the side. Archmere Academy, which has built many buildings since, is now a thriving school, and one of the top high schools in Delaware. Raskob's business interests from this time were focused on the Empire State Building, but also included extensive precious metal mining interests in Nevada and New Mexico. Raskob remained with DuPont until his retirement from the company in 1946. Raskob had 13 children, and lost one son, William F. Raskob II, to an auto accident at the age of 20, establishing a charitable foundation in his honor which survives to this day.[1]. In 1921, he was appointed a Knight of St. Gregory by Pope Pius XI, recognizing him for his contributions.[2] After his death, a substantial amount of his wealth went to support the Raskob Foundation for Catholic Activities which had been founded in the mid-1940s, and remains one of the largest family-operating charitable foundations in the U.S.[3] In 2006, RFCA was chaired by William F. Raskob III. John J. Raskob is buried at Cathedral Cemetery in the city of Wilmington, DE.[citations needed] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_J._Raskob The treasurer of the SMOM was none other than John J. Raskob, the head of the Democratic National Committee (DNC), who opposed Franklin D. Roosevelt in his campaign to win the Democratic Presidential nomination in 1932, and who in 1934, inspired by the French fascist Croix de Feu, and working closely with Morgan Bank's John Davis, was the principal financier of the fascist coup plot against FDR. http://www.larouchepub.com/other/2004/3127mexico_synarchy.html Immensely wealthy American financier gave an interview to Samuel Crowther of the Ladies' Home Journal in which he proposed that everyone invest heavily in the stock market. In fact, he advocated buying stocks on margin: Suppose a man marries at the age of twenty-three and begins a regular savings of fifteen dollars a month -- and almost anyone who is employed can do that if he tries. If he invests in good common stocks and allows the dividends and rights to accumulate, he will at the end of twenty years have at least eighty thousand dollars[...] I am firm in my belief than anyone not only can be rich but ought to be rich. Raskob's scenario implies a phenomenal 26% annual yield on the young man's stock investments. As it happens, the article (entitled Everybody Ought to be Rich) arrived at newsstands in August 1929, just two months before the calamitous market crash. ... Grandpa Mort, a RD#1 Columbiana resident since 1928 referred to me as a macarel snapper. He also kidded me for liking blondes, and, confronting my confidence, said I "had a high opinion of myself." He encouraged me to become a lawyer showing me Bill Lodge's black Cadillac and Dad encouraged me to become a lawyer showing me Mr DeBartolo lived next-door to his attorney.
