Kara Walker is an American artist whose work explores the horrors of slavery and the old sexual stereotypes of Black women that still are present in our culture today. Her medium is black paper cut into silhouettes, once a popular Victorian art style. Kara Walker was inspired to make work of this content when she read the story Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell in graduate school. In the story there are happy ignorant slaves that defended their white masters. There was even a part of the novel where the heroine Scarlet O’Hara goes to the slaves’ quarters and is overcome by a “niggery” scent and vomits. The racism in the book is poorly covered by the romanticism. Kara Walker thought about how it would be the want to be the heroine and kill her at the same time.
