MTV Radio: You're doing a song for the "Charlie's Angels" movie.
Have you recorded it yet?
Beyoncé: Yes, we did. It's called "Independent Women." I got a
chance to actually write and produce the song. When the label
heard it, they were like, "The song is hot. It has to be on the
'Charlie's Angels' soundtrack." Of course, we were like, "That
would be wonderful." So we changed it up and put a little
"Charlie's Angels" flavor in it, and there it was. It was a great
experience for us.
MTV: Is that going to be the first single off that soundtrack?
Beyoncé: I think so, and I think they're trying to get the
actresses in the video, which would be wonderful.
MTV: Will it be an action-packed video?
Beyoncé: Yep. We have the wings working and the "Charlie's
Angels" vibe going. It'll be hot.
MTV: Was that nerve-wracking for you, being the producer and
the writer of the song as well as a performer?
Beyoncé: It's a little difficult. You're kind of nervous, because you
can't blame it on somebody else if it doesn't do well. But I think
the song came out great, and as long as you just do what you
feel, it'll be okay.
MTV: How was it in the studio with the new members, Farrah and
Michelle?
Beyoncé: It was great. The ladies, it was their first time in the
studio, actually, doing "Independent Women," so it was a great
experience for them. They did a wonderful job, and anyone that
didn't know would never have known that they had never been in
the studio. They were very talented.
MTV: Tell us about the song on the "Big Momma's House"
soundtrack. Farrah and Michelle sang on that one too, right?
Beyoncé: Oh, the "Big Momma's" soundtrack. The girls sang on
that song also, and they did a wonderful job in the studio. Gosh,
we did that song with Jermaine Dupri and Da Brat. They flew to
Houston; we heard the track, we loved it. We did it separately
from Da Brat, so we hadn't heard her vocals yet. When we heard
her vocals with it, it just took the whole song to the next level. It
came out great, and the whole soundtrack is wonderful.
MTV: Have you been working on a solo project?
Beyoncé: No, I haven't. A lot of people have been saying that,
but I don't know where they're getting it from.
MTV: How about the next studio album? Are you guys thinking
about it?
Beyoncé: Yeah, everybody's thinking about it. We're all trying to
get ideas together, and I've written a couple of songs for the
album. We're just excited. We're getting out our pad and writing
down all the producers we want to work with.
MTV: Is there pressure to get out a new album, since the last one
did so well?
Beyoncé: Well, definitely. The album has sold almost 5 million
records. Everybody is just loving the second album. We would
have never known that it would be so successful when we first
recorded it. So we're kind of nervous, to be honest with you,
because we have to top that. It's possible, because we've grown
and we've learned. Definitely, the reason why the second album
was so good is because we grew and learned tremendously
between the first album and the second. We've grown and
learned and things have changed, so definitely, the [third] album
will be just as hot.
MTV: You guys have been in the spotlight for a relatively short
amount of time, but you still got a slot on the VH1 "Divas" show.
Tell us about that.
Beyoncé: Yes! We were very happy. When we found out about
"Divas," we were in tears with excitement. Really, the group
started ten years ago -- a lot of people don't know -- so it's been
a long time. There've been a lot of struggles, and I think after all
of that, it's paying off.
