An Introduction to Yap
The islands of Yap are located in the western part of the Pacific Ocean. It is
part of the Federated States of Micronesia. These Micronesian
islands are very unique. Here’s why:
.
·
Yap
has one of the most traditional cultures in the world.
·
Natives still live like their
ancestors did.
·
People live on the outer islands,
which can be less that 100 feet across at some
points. (imagine if a tidal wave came
along!)
·
They speak a unique language.
·
The Yapese dance to tell stories.
And much more…..

Did you know
that Yap has the biggest currency in the world?
Yep!
(or should I say Yap?) The Yapese use stone money, which are big, round,
disks carved out of stone,as
their currency. Of course, they use
American money, but stone money as well.
Talk about the $Bling-bling! $
Psst! Wanna Know Something
interesting?
Well,
we Yapese have a little inside joke we like to tell. Ok, it all started when our ancestors
sailed across the ocean to our neighboring islands of Palau. They carved out round disks of stone and
took it home to Yap. That
stone was then used as money. Well
everyone knows Palau is famous for its Rock Islands. And so we like to say that we carved the Rock Islands for them! Oh yeah, and we also stole from right under
their noses.
