Breeders vs Puppy Producers

Purchasing a puppy, young adult or an older dog from a well respected Breeder is a wise thing.

"Respected" longtime Breeders have "paid dues" which includes.....many yr's of real work......not just "producing" litters. With the popularity as the # 1 breed, sadly Labradors are the breed of choice for a lot of folks to use as their "Cottage Industry". Anyone that has been "in" Labradors and is respected should have multiple references from other "longterm" exhibitors available.

Joining a "Club" entering a few dog shows or having a website are NOT what being a real Breeder is about!! Putting titles on your Labrador "yourself" , working as a club member, working with rescue, learning from a Mentor(s) and maybe eventually being a Mentor yourself, etc .........giving back to the dog world is what a "real" Breeder is about.

I started out with one Labrador and very gradually added dogs......I never had more than one litter per yr til I was "in" the Breed for almost 10 yrs.

People that buy a few "nice" Bitches from other real Breeders ***by misleading them about their true intentions, situations such as this have caused many old-timers to shy away from placing full registration puppies with "newbies"*** and within a few yrs are producing up wards of 5 plus litters a yr. and actually "doing" very little in the "Dog World" are nothing but Puppy Producers.....riding the money train of the most popular Breed in the World! There are plenty of wonderful puppies / dogs available from "real" Breeders without purchasing and supporting the "Puppy Producers".

A visit to a Breeders home is important, but remember that most Breeders keep their dogs either inside or if numbers don't allow for this they may have a small/modest kennel building. Few people either have the money themselves or "make" money enough from "producing" litters to have an actual "Kennel". I know and have visited dozens of real "Breeders" over the yr's and only a couple have what could be described as a "Kennel"

Many / most live modestly and have a "real" job, and the dogs are a hobby / passion for them! My Husband & I live in a "vintage Mobile Home" and both have "real jobs" in addition I spend a minimum of 4 hr's a day doing dog related chores / activities. This is NOT a money making "operation" by any stretch of the imagination. Every yr we "invest" in upgrades and additions to maintain and improve our dogs lives. My next project / goal here is to "cover", add a partial roof over my runs off my kennel building and add more patio blocks to 2 of the runs.

My buildings are an 8' x 8' "Puppy House" that is insulated and is climate controlled, with over 200 s.f. of patio block play area. My larger building is 8' x 16' and has 3 indoor areas, 2 are 4' x 4', the other is 4' x 8'. The floor is cement *for easy cleaning and disinfecting* covered with rubber mats for comfort. In cold weather we use cedar shaving and straw. During the day the dogs there have free access to large *12' x 24' secure runs and several times daily they have playtime in larger grassy paddock areas. In good weather there's a pool or I take them swimming in anyone of the several near-by Lakes or Ponds. We enjoy walks on the near-by trails as my "back yard" is the White Mountain National Forest.

All my dogs "grow up" indoors with us, they are house and crate trained, learning basic obedience and manners. I try to take everyone thru at least a "beginners" obedience class. Even after they've "graduated" to spending time in the Kennel they take turns as one of the 4-5 "house dogs".

My point here is the world is full of "Sales People", and as a puppy buyer you "need" to read between the lines. People that "brag" about what "other" people have accomplished with Labradors produced by them should be proud. But I would have real respect for those that "do" for themselves and not ride on the success of others.

Do your research, talk with several Breeders before making a decision. You can get "lucky" and find a wonderful dog from some "new" to the Dog World but the advantages of dealing with a long time Breeder are many.

Please "support" those that have **paid their dues** and they will continue to support the Labradors they've long loved.

I will gladly help anyone in their search, as my goal is for everyone that's wishes for one can have a happy and healthy Labrador!!
