Spirituality & Religion-- Part II:
Oneness and Purpose of Religion



  
       "The religion of God and His divine law are the most potent instruments and the surest of all means for the dawning of the light of unity amongst men."*
    

  
How can religion bring unity when the religions themselves are in opposition to one another? The teachings of many of todays churches now admit to the Oneness of God, and that the same divine source speaks through different "Mouthpieces" or Manifestations at different times throughout history. Their purpose is that of advancing the civilization of humankind, and this idea is found in all the Holy Books and scriptures of the Faiths, for Divine revalation is "a continuous and progressive process."*


              History shows that approximately once in every 500-1000 years the world experiences a "Return" of one of these unique and Holy Beings, and a "Divine Springtime" begins. A renewal and resurgence of all the arts and sciences is seen, and signs of a forward -moving civilization become re-activated. Many believe that we are overdue for such a "visitation", and that, in fact, we may be living in just such an age.

          The misuse of religion and the turning away of the people has left a gaping hole in society that cannot be filled by any other instittution or force. Its decline is a sore loss, with widespread implications that can only be dimly percieved at this stage in history. The need of humanity is great in our time: solutions must be found that provide forgiveness and healing to mend the rift. Let us begin with a clear understanding of the One Source of the great religions of the world: this Source is one and the same God , from age to age...


Revelation is without End



 Among the prophecies of all the Holy Books as to the coming of a Universal Being or Manifestation are the follwing:

        ..."the Hindu Scriptures refer to the "Most Great Spirit", the "Tenth Avatar", the "Immaculate Manifestation of Krishna." To that One, they say, Gotama Buddha referred when telling of "a Buddha named Maitreye, the Buddha of universal fellowship", and also Jesus the Christ, who spoke of the "Glory of God," "Alpha and Omega", "the Beginning and the End", and "the First and the Last". The Apostle of God, Muhammad, alluded to the One who is to come as well in His Book, referring to the "Great Announcement".*

These wondrous "Messengers", in their own words and holy books, have never denied the existence of the Great Beings who went before them, or Who would come after their passing. They have never placed themselves in opposition to Them; rather they have exhorted their own followers to "watch" and "cleave fast" to those Manifestations who would continue their own spiritual revelations in a later era.


Where We Went Wrong


            The purity of the writings of these Divine Teachers has become diluted and misconstrued as Their word has been passed from one generation to another. It is for this very reason: to refresh and update Spirit's teachings to fit the times, that a new "Spiritual Messenger" or "Manifestation" is sent from age to age, renewing those fundamental truths enshrined in all religions.


The Religions: Dawn and Dusk


The days that mark the birth of a new religion are days of great enthusiasm and rapture; but like the dawn of a new day, its first streaks are seen by few. As the religion grows, it is like the sun rising in the sky: seen by many, its numbers grow.

But as time passes and the new teachings age, they seem less relevant or suited to the needs of the age; their potency and clarity dims. The now aging faith begins to lose its "true Sprituality"; as men begin to interpret and embellish it; its garment becomes an empty vessel devoid of heart. Night has fallen, leaving the mass of the people dissilusioned with the misconceptions and ego- driven masters of the once- bright face of their sweet old religion...


Spiritual Limbo


We stand now at the edge of an just such an era, many of the religions of the past have gone beyond their "prime", so to speak; the greatest momentum and ingathering of the followers has waned, and the teachings are being "re-written" by the hand of man, to adapt them to an age beyond their orginal scope. left to their own devices, confusion, dissconnection, and "spiritual limbo" reign, so to speak, for the old religions do not truly speak to the hearts of the people, yet another a clear alternative is not seen...
 

Where to, now?


It is not the loss of religiosity that I lament; but the hurting of the hearts and the loss of a solid vessel that can safely channel humanity to spirit; The loss of needed power that such a vessel may hold for the Unification and Empowerment of our world is untenable in this day, for the great mass of men are in need of such a channel.
To acknowlege that it is not the Faiths that are at fault, but that this is part of the normal ebb and flow of the history of religion, is progress. For some, it is enough to acknowlege just where we are at: that is the first step towards change. For others, there are new paths of investigation opening daily, and may we always--- Seek with an Open Heart!


The Aims of True Religion


 More than one Author of the ages has expressed humanity's need of Spirit as found through a clear vessel such as that of the great Faiths of the world. It is written that the purpose of religion is to "carry forward an ever- advancing civilization." Surely it must be a channel to Spirit; but more than that-- its purpose is to help humanity meet the needs of whatever age in which we dwell. For today, the greatest need of our world is peace, and justice to support that peace. Individual salvation is not enough-- for what good is it to save myself if the world is going down in flames?

    
   Religion is one of the great unifying and galvanizing powers of all time... Its misuse has taken a sore toll... let us not prematurely relegate it to the scrap heap--- 

 May our Hearts heal and Open, each according to his own capacity, to all tools of Power that can help to heal our world...
