For the needs of Peace...
The Promise of World Peace A Summary “To the Peoples of the World: “The Great Peace long promised and hoped for by the Prophets, poets and peoples of the Earth is now not only within our reach, but is inevitable. We now have a choice either to wait for unimaginable horrors to sweep the Earth, which will force us to make peace, or change our ways and start working for that Peace now. This century has seen many hopeful signs; the United Nations, new organizations for peace and international cooperation, the interfaith movement, and more. Science is now advanced enough to solve the practical problems of peace, but people still have to overcome false ideas and prejudices before we can move forward. The “Will To Act” Our sense of helplessness in the face of world problems has its roots in the dismal failure of the ‘substitute faiths’ of our time, bred in the “underlying spiritual damage… the apathy that has gripped the mass of the peoples of all nations and the extinction of hope in the heart of deprived millions.” The belief that humans are naturally selfish, violent and. unable to change has made us think that peace is impossible; our different social, economic, and religious systems breed violence, and war, and have led us to believe that this is natural human behavior. We must realize that humanity can change before we can start building new systems which create peace instead of war. The authors believe that the present chaos is a natural state in our planet’s progress toward unity; this is humanity growing into adulthood; the confusion that comes before rebuilding. In concert with their Baha'i constituents, the authors believe that peace is now possible and we have everything we need to make it happen. They ask you to think about this. A Role for Religion Religion’s denial of its shared roots in the oneness of God has caused alienation among the masses; seen as increasingly “irrelevant to the major concerns of the modern world”, many have rejected faith. In its place, other doctrines and materialistic ideologies have bred injustice, human degradation and despair. Among its themes, The Promise of World Peace echoes the words of Baha’u’llah in asserting that: “No serious attempt to set human affairs aright, to achieve world peace, can ignore religion. Man’s perception and practice of it are largely the stuff of history.” Principles for Peace The issues of universal education, of racism, and of religious differences must be addressed. The status of women and of’ the poor must be upraised; justice must be the foundation of peace. A universal language is urgently. needed, which everyone can learn in addition to their own language. World order can only be based on the oneness of humanity, which means letting go of all our prejudices. The idea of the oneness of humanity should be proclaimed everywhere, taught in schools and upheld in every nation. We are all citizens of the world. To take care of our own we must take care of the world. War will not come to an end by the signing of agreements between two or three nations. We need something which will deal with the whole world at once. The love of one’s country must come second to the love of the world. Every sovereign nation needs to keep its own unique identity and traditions, yet, in addition, the world must acknowledge and work together in a shared economy, a world government, and a common goal. Each nation will still run its own affairs, but must put the needs of the world first. The time for unlimited national powers has come to an end. A world super state must now be created to include: an International Executive, a World Parliament elected by everyone in their own country, and a World Court with binding judgment. A Mighty Gathering Baha’u’llah, the prophetic Founder of the Baha’i Faith, called for a vast gathering of people: experts, world leaders, and respected citizens, to consider ways of laying the foundations for world peace. The consorts of this gathering must consult “with courage, determination, pure motives, and selfless love to establish an agreement which should be regarded as sacred.” The boundaries of each nation should be fixed, armaments strictly limited, and rules laid down for international relationships. The whole world should arise against any government who breaks any part of this agreement. We appeal to the leaders and peoples of all nations to call this vital meeting. “The holding of this mighty gathering is long overdue.” “History has brought us to this point, the dawn of humanity’s maturity. Surely the United Nations, with the full support of its membership, will rise to play its part. Let men and women, youth and children everywhere give support… “Let it be this generation”… that establishes this glorious stage in the evolution of peace. Yet this is not the final goal of human social development. Rather, it is in the inevietable unification of all people of the world into “one universal family.” The work of the United Nations, increased cooperation in international projects, and greater religious tolerance in many areas show the drive towards unity. The experience of the Baha’i community is an example and a proof of the workable practicality of a global society; it is offered as a model for study. “We join with all those who want an end to war, for we believe that the time has come when peace can be established.” “These fruitless strifes, these ruinous wars, shall pass away, and the ‘Most Great Peace’ shall come.” — Bahaullah _________________________________________________________________________ The Promise of World Peace was issued by the Universal House of Justice, the supreme international body of the Baha’i Faith at the World Centre at Haifa, Israel. It is addressed to you, the peoples of the world. It has been sent to political leaders and VIPs all over the globe. Dissemination began in 1985; the aim is to reach everyone on the planet— until peace prevails on earth. Excerpts herein are from a summary of the document.
