“Roadblocks” of the Mind — Practices for an Open Mind & Heart

”Self– inventory”
: A Re- Check of our Purpose & the Basis Of our Lives…

Daily ”self– inventory” is a vital part of many spiritual pathways. We are enjoined to regularly take stock of our thoughts and actions, assessing what we might change. This does not guarantee the open mind, but it can help to keep one’s mind open to change and growth, regularly “pruning” the ego to a manageable size. And that ego is the major “roadblock” between us and truth.

Have you ever thought you might be missing something big in life’s focus on the material, mundane and daily needs? When we get that feeling, it’s vital to respond, taking the actions of contemplation or search— for without some action on our part, the "window" of our interest will likely close again. Only doing something can keep us in touch with that awakening. Not to decide or act is actually a decision to do nothing, diverting further examination. We should know that in time that “window“ of the mind’s openness or desire to explore new or old opportunities is not a given— when that “window closes it may not open again for years, if ever.

Especially in our times of many challenges; it is important to think: “Might there be something I could have missed?” Under pressure, we often delve deeper into the truth of the heart. We can also look inward as a regular practice, rather than wait for crisis. Wouldn’t it be well for us to ask ourselves, perhaps in daily quiet time, “What could I be missing?”

Healthy Self– Nurturing

Crisis facilitates change and investigation, but oddly enough, these can also be assisted when one feels safe in life and takes time to do things that are self– nurturing. The truth can be as kind as it sometimes seems cruel, when we bring it to ourselves in a kindly way. We can be kind to ourselves in taking time to absorb reality slowly, quietly and generously, pairing this with the things that comfort us. We can work hard on a problem, but its often when we “stop and put our feet up” that what we weren’t seeing will “dawn” on us!

Essentially, we are taking time to “stretch” in heart and spirit when we practice “self– kindness”, doing anything healthy to relax, maintain and heal mind or body. We can then open to previously unseen realities or opportunities and enhance our personal and spiritual development.

Faith: Coming from “I don’t Know”—

A closed mind has little faith that there could be answers beyond what it has already decided it knows. An open mind believes that wherever truth leads it can be reconciled, and that whatever happens with that will be okay.

To turn truth away will ultimately limit and blind areas of our lives, but we can learn that the greatest safety is in the open heart. We can take is as our guide, trusting in inner eyes and ears. Admitting that “I don’t know” can be scary, and living in that even harder. It is vital that we think this through to become fully convinced that openness to what is true and willingness to adapt to it is the better way. Many will also feel the need for help from a “power greater” than the mind; however that is accessed or what we call that makes no difference.

There are times when all we can do is trust and "feel" our way towards what we think might be truth— and when we get there, then we can decide whether it is true or not, as we choose. Sometimes we just have to live in “i don’t know, but I think tit might be…” Almost as if blind or deaf, Spirit willing, we move through untried ground, with unseen help or some wiser “eye” to guide us. No matter how inadequate it seems, there is often a "Bigger place"— whether we experience it from outside or inside ourselves— that is more reliable than mind alone, which often guides us to nothing more than our own ego.......

Sometimes when we don’t know the truth of something, we can find out more by choosing a path that we believe may be true— then we “act as if” it is true, trusting that results will reveal a clearer way. Being willing to let go of one’s own ideas and live without answers, or even take on a foreign belief system for a time shows real humility and faith that are necessary aspects of the open mind. The gift is that these grow and expand as one continues to practice them.

Prayer, Meditation, Humility and “Self– forgetting”

Meditation and prayer do not automatically come under the heading of “letting go of self”, but they clearly can help with that endeavor. We become "self- forgetful" when we focus on “Something Bigger” or “outside’ ourselves, letting go of self– will and following in the ”flow” or in service to "Something Greater"* than what we see. This is also the practice of humility, a necessary component of the open mind. Humility is knowing that we are not the “be– all, end– all” of creation.

The essence of a truly spiritual pathways is to provide just this sort of thing: a means to open mind and heart to a greater force or knowledge. The seeker is encouraged to see and accept the need for a true connection with self, life, and "Something Greater"*, committing to ongoing efforts in the development of that connection as the groundwork of his or her life.

Self- forgetting” is an element of the practices named above as well. “The 'Master Key' to self-mastery is self- forgetting. The road to the palace of life is through the path of renunciation." — 'Abdu'l-Bahá: star of the West, Vol. XVII, p. 348

“A Whack on the side of the Head”

An inner shift in thinking can happen when we are somehow, perhaps even shockingly or suddenly confronted with ideas that are very different from our own. Merely to know what another thinks is possible can, help us access deeper knowing. The “whack” is provided by our exposure to creative thinking. Even our own creativity can be like “a whack on the side of the head” catapulting us to greater understandings. A “journey of the mind” is offered in these pages with that end— to jog and awaken the thinking. The hypothetical “what if” encounter presents understandably resisted spiritual scenarios that could hold a grain of truth, or more. Whether or not one accepts its premises, the stretch of the mind can be worth the journey. How far we take it is our own choice...

Faith, or Believing…

Could you believe that there ARE answers out there-- and that Each one of us-- no matter how vulnerable or sure of ourselves-- can Search our Hearts To see what we are shutting out?

The truth can be as kind as it sometimes seems cruel. We can be kind to ourselves in letting truth in as we become ready. Being kind to ourselves makes us more able to let truth i n...
—Can we do it-- for Ourselves & for our World?

Yet, for any major movement to occur, there must be some action on our part. Our human accessibility to let in certain truths seems to have its moments, its upsets and and its limits... Without action or some kind of commitment to deeper investigation, time itself closes that "window of opportunity", and who knows when it may open again.
Doing nothing-- ie., no "decision" is still a decision , & Detours & wanderings can go on for years…

That's why we offer ongoing engagement and awakening the Spirit- Mind, and investigating truths that are of import to ourselves and our world…

Is there Light For Our Time?

More importantly: What beloved opinions, personal desires, or fancied “independence"
am I willing to give up for it?

Truth is more precious to us than our very sight— It should be-- for our entire lives, and more, are powerfully affected when we turn away from what is true......

I truly believe that Spirit has provided the answers for our World-- and that
Each one of us must search our hearts for those answers, and to see what we are shutting out
Let us do it-- for Ourselves & for our World?
