Mia On The National Team
Mia Hamm was fifteen when she joined the national team. This made her the youngest player to ever be on the U.S. national team. Her first game was August 3, 1987 against China. Hamm was the first ever three-time U.S. Athlete of the Year. In 1996, she led the National Team in scoring with 19 goals and 18 assists. She was a member of the Gold Medal winning U.S. Woman's National Team in the 1996 Olympics and was named U.S. Soccer's Female Athlete of the Year for three consecutive years. She was also MVP of the Women's world cup in Sweden in 1995, where she scored three goals off of long-range free kicks. Mia also played several minutes at goalkeeper against Denmark in the World Cup in Sweden when regular keeper Briana Scurry was taken out of the game and the U.S. had to use all of their substitutes.
Mia In Collage/High School
Mia Hamm went to collage at the University of North Carolina. She was a four-time member of the NCAA championship UNC team, and is a two-time Missouri Athletic Club and Hermann Award winner. Mia is also an All-American from Lake Braddok Secondary School in Burke, VA. She played at Notre Dame High School in Wichita Falls, Texas, as well.
Mia Outside Of Soccer
Mia Hamm graduated from UNC in May of 1994 with a degree in political science. She was named on of People Magazine’s 50 Most Beautiful People in 1997. She is divorced, but formally married to Christian Corry, a Marine Corps Pilot. She was also named the Woman’s Sports Foundation Athlete of the Year for 1997. Mia was featured on the July/August cover of Women's Soccer World Magazine, and on the second Sports Illustrated-Women' Sport.
