FALA is a Polish word that translates into “wave” in English. This word can be used to describe a radio wave, but was also used by radical insurgent movements in Poland to symbolize a “wave of people” rising up against oppression. We start each show with the song “FALA” by the band “Siekera”, a political Polish band from the 1980s. The lyrics of this song, sung in Polish, talk about a wave of under-represented and oppressed peoples in society (they mention the disabled, prostitutes, homeless, gays, children, women, and dissidents) rising to overcome an unjust society.

The FALA show follows the theme of the FALA song  in that we give air time to voices and ideas that are under-represented even within “radical” or progressive movements within America.  FALA show features songs sung by independent, underground, political activists from Eastern Europe, Latin America, and Asia.

We  believe in the importance of listening to music, ideas, and voices of people from abroad as a way to broaden our horizons and gain an international perspective on global and national issues. For this reason we also incorporate News and commentary , from international sources such as The Guardian (UK), Car Busters (CZ), Gazeta (PL), and others. Topics we've discussed include the news we found on the BBC website about the Pentagon denying use of Napalm in the latest Iraq war (The Guardian), bicycling incentives of the EU (BBC), and the Critical Mass bike ride in Warsaw that toped 1000 riders last summer (Car Busters).

In keeping with the punk/hardcore underground music of the show we also read selections from zines (independently published mini magazines). Zines are, in many ways, a print version of the radical underground music we play on the show. Oftentimes a band will put out a zine along with their CD or 7” that will have information about their ideas, and local struggles. Many will also translate their lyrics into English in their accompanying zines so we can understand (and talk about) the issues they sing about.

If you run a label / play in a band, send us your material, including demos, vinyl, cds, cd-rs, tapes and zines for airplay:
