The Radio Controlled Laser Kwa Zulu Natal Provincial Championships were sailed last Saturday and Sunday the 6th and 7th June at the Pond at Blue Lagoon in Durban. The regatta was well attended with a turnout of 16 RCLs and more importantantly there were entries from all of the major provinces in SA, Gauteng, the Cape and Kwa Zulu Natal. The fleet was diverse in age with competitors ranging from 11years to 85 years old, surely this must be one of the only sports where this vast array of ages compete equally!

The Race Officials, Mike Surgeson, Mike Dixon and Ed Page did a fantastic job to get a total of 19 races in over the two days with mostly light winds, north easterly on Saturday and south westerly on Sunday.

Young Rudi McNeil from Point Yacht Club took the gold by achieving eleven firsts, six seconds and the last two races were discards as Rudi had some trouble with his sail delaminating after a helicopter, that was supporting the Pietermaritzurg to Durban Montain Bike Challenge that finished at Blue Lagoon on Sunday, decided to take off from the side of the Pond just as Rudi and other got to the windward mark. Taking the silver medal, was radio control stalward, Des Fairbank from Maritzburg Radio Yacht Club, who has won the RCLaser Provincial and National Championships many times over the 10 years that the class has been sailing in South Africa. Norrie Taylor from Durban Radio Boat Club was a very close third tying on points with Barry Loubser from Milnerton Aquatic Club in Cape Town, but taking the bronze medal on the tie breaking mechanism.

It was fantastic to see four sailors from the "youth" category sailing in the regatta with Sam Bronner and Brent Bingham sailing their first major regatta in the class and Euan Hurter sailing his second Provincials. With this interest the class is looking good for the future!

The SA National Championships will be held on the first weekend of November at the same venue
