Nine Squares (Line Movement)

Yet another grade nine projet. Done in late May or early June of 2004, this was an opportunity for the students to pretty much practice different techniques to use for our more major projects. We had to use different thicknesses of lines, splaying them different widths apart from eachother and such to create depth and movement.

Designs were mostly taken and then modified from past students' work that we were given to look at, but a few came from my head. First done in pencil, the ink is from a 0.5mm Pilot Pen in black.

This is one of my favourites. It began with the lines just being straight and increasing in width of the actual line, but I changed it to look more like a spider web. The depth here isn't as intense as I would like it to be, but it is mainly emphasized by the increase in width at the line intersections. Also, this effect gives it the look of a spider web. To get a cleaner result, I wish I would have started with the spider web plan rather than revert to it after initial inking for the other design had been done.

Now this one combines the movement of lines with pointillism within the shapes. The shapes therefore are meant to look 3D and then flowing with the surrounding lines. For part of the effect of this particular square, the lines haven't been conducted with a ruler, but by freehand. This makes them obviously more shaky. All you have to do is start at the bottom or top and then whenever you 'hit' a shape, go around it. All following lines should coincide with the one before it.
