The story of Lex and Iris

It had struck. The virus had struck... And mum and dad didn’t want Lex to stay home and see them falling ill.
“You will leave tomorrow. To that camp I told you about.”
“But...”
“No buts. You are going. Full stop. End of discussion.”
And so it was decided. Next morning he left to the camp. Unwillingly he did it but he had no choice...
He hated it there... From the first day, from the first minute even. He hated Mam. She was getting on his nerves. And everyone else thought it was funny. Why? Why couldn’t they see that this “camp” was more like a prison? Well someone understood and supported him – Ryan. It didn’t make any difference though...

After being sent away from the camp Lex went home to find...that no one was there. His parents were gone. Dead. He had lost them...
“Why? Why? Why? Why them out of all people? Others hadn’t caught the virus, why did my parents fall ill?”
This was the time he first got drunk. And why not? No one cared about it anyway. At least not anymore.
Lex walked down the street looking for someone. Anyone at all. But the streets were empty. He couldn’t see anyone.
“Maybe they all are dead? And all who haven’t died have been sent away to camps.”
At this point he started laughing. The thought that he might have been the only living person in this city didn’t scare him because nothing could scare this tough guy. It could only make him laugh, at least in this condition.
Suddenly he heard someone coming.
“Who could it be? Oh, I know, it’s a hooker!” he yelled.
A young girl came out of the dark. When she saw Lex she jumped to the wall and tried to make herself invisible. But it was too late. Drunken Lex had already seen her.
“Don’t be afraid you little girl!” he shouted, “I won’t harm you!”
With these words he slipped and fell. The girl jumped toward Lex.
“Are you hurt?”
“No, no, I’m fine, don’t worry.”
“Come on, stand up.”
She helped him up and guided him to the pavement.
“Sit down and rest. It was quite a shock, this fall I mean”
Suddenly Lex wasn’t feeling drunk at all.
“What are you doing out so late?” the girl asked.
“Celebrating.”
“Celebrating? What?”
“Oh, nothing big. Just the loss of my parents.” And he started to cry. Then took a deep breath and tried to calm down. “And what about you?”
“Well… I’m going to register for one of those camps…”
“I wouldn’t go there if I were you!”
“Why not? Have you been there?”
“Yes, I have. It’s awful there. They make you do things you don’t want to do and they treat you like a piece of shit there!”
“Oh… Then what am I supposed to do? Where could I stay?” And tears started falling from her eyes and rolling down her face.
“Well… If you have no place to go… You could spend the night over at my place. That is, if you’re not afraid.”
“Oh, thank you. Thank you so much! By the way, my name is Iris”
“Nice name! I’m Lex.”
And together they went back to Lex’s apartment. Down the dark streets of this quiet city where no one seemed to be alive… Finally they got to his house. They had to climb up the stairs to the 10th floor because the elevator hadn’t been working for ages. Once in the flat they lid a candle because there was no electricity.
“So, this is my home.”
“You mean WAS?”
“Was? Why?”
“Haven’t you heard? Flats where everyone is dead are the property of city and that means you don’t have any right to live here.”
“But…I’m not dead. I’m very much alive,” Lex said.
“Well, you’re supposed to be in that camp. Like all the other children.”
“So what does it mean?”
“Well, if someone will come to check and will find you here, you will either be sent to prison or to one of those camps. I really think that you should go and register. It’s not that bad in camps”
“No! You haven’t been there! So don’t come talking like you know anything!”
“Sorry! I didn’t mean to upset you.”
“No, it’s me who should be sorry. I really didn’t mean to yell at you. It’s just a bit hard to talk about for me.”
“Oh, well… It’s ok.”
“Well… Where would you like to sleep? On the couch or in the bed?”
“Umm, I don’t know. Where do you usually sleep?”
“Well, in my bed… But you can sleep there if you want to.”
“Oh no, I will sleep on the couch.”
