Throughout Dean's life, he has enjoyed boating with the family and with friends. His first boating experience was on his father's home built cabin cruiser and later on a 24' sailboat. These were the carrots that piqued his thirst for being on the water. Later, during Dean's working career, he crewed on various racing sailboats and was hired for two Hawaii to San Francisco ocean crossings. Finally, Dean got his Merchant Marine Captain's License and landed a job piloting a 60' trimaran with Dream Cruises carrying passengers out to enjoy the beautiful waters in Kona, Hawaii.
After 6 months of piloting the Kona Dream, Dean took a different job piloting 5 vessels for Ocean Sports at Anaeho'omalu Bay. That position allowed him to be the captain aboard Sea Smoke, Alala, Diver One, GBB and Tapestry. It was an excellent opportunity as it allowed Dean to gain valuable experience piloting various vessels in a variety of situations.
After a few months, the call of Kona waters was too great and Dean came back to Dream Cruises. It was great to be back on the Kona Dream taking passengers on various cruises along the Kona Coast. After another year, an opportunity arose which allowed Captain Dean to purchase and run his own boat, the Spanish Main. Feel free to take a look at his yachting resume.
Since Dean got his Captain's license, he has been training to teach the Captain's course. Recently Captain Carl Devoe has hired Captain Dean to begin teaching along side him. If you take the Maritime License Center Captain's course in Kona then you will see Captain Dean in front of the class along with Captain Carl Devoe.
