One Nation, Under God



“I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

July 4, 1776…the day The Declaration of Independence was signed in Congress. The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America says:
“When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation. We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed. That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.” Then before the signatures it reads, “And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor.”
Our Declaration of Independence declares that each of us has an “inalienable Right to Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.” Thomas Jefferson defined government's role, "The care of human life and happiness, and not their destruction, is the first and only object of good government." Government should protect all of us, especially before we are born, when we are most vulnerable. In an article by Terence J. Hughes in Celebrate Life magazine published by American Life League, Mr. Hughes states, “The Declaration of Independence declares that our unalienable Rights come from our Creator, from God, not from Man, not from the State. To secure these Rights, the Declaration of Independence is listed first in the United States Code of Federal statutory law. It is part of the organic law of this nation, the one part that our Constitution was written to protect. These Rights, beginning with the Right to Life that God has given each of us when we were created, can never be unconstitutional.” He also says, “The order of our "unalienable Rights" stated in the Declaration recognizes that we cannot pursue happiness without first having liberty, and we cannot gain liberty without first having life. Legalized abortion allows the subordinate pursuit of happiness of one group in our land to abrogate the paramount Right to Life of a more helpless and dependent group, who therefore lose their rights to liberty and to pursue happiness as well… any form of government can “become destructive” to our “unalienable Rights”. That includes democracy. In the case of legalized abortion, it includes this democracy. We are “created” with these rights. We are created when we come into existence individually, and that is at the moment of our conception, not nine months later when we are born. We are not “created equal” when one-third of us is being killed during those first nine months and the remaining two-thirds are allowed to live.”
Mr. Hughes said, “Slavery was the great denial of “unalienable Rights” that existed in the early days of our republic.” In Abraham Lincoln’s appeal to abolish the Institution of Human Bondage in America, he appealed to the Declaration of Independence. “Abortion exists today as the great denial of our Declaration of Independence,” says Mr. Hughes. “Pray to God Almighty to shed His mercy on these babies, their killers, and this country, so that the American nation is spared another conflagration like the Civil War.” But the killing of innocent life continues. Millions of babies have been denied their unalienable Rights to Life, Liberty and Happiness. Thousands upon thousands of mothers have been denied their Right to Happiness.
In 1973, when abortion was legalized, the Supreme Court held that a woman's right to an abortion fell within the right to privacy protected by the Fourteenth Amendment of the Constitution. How can this be when the Fourteenth Amendment says, “nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws”?? If you recall, the Supreme Court also legalized slavery. The Constitution states, “We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.” Webster defines "posterity" as "all future generations." A future generation can only refer to the unborn. But seven of the nine justices of the Supreme Court ignored the fact that the Constitution very plainly protected the rights of "posterity."
The Susan B. Anthony List (www.sba-list.org) reports that pro-abortion Senators are continuing to block the constitutional process of a vote on President Bush's judicial nominations. The function of the U.S. Court System is in crisis! Pro-abortion groups are spreading rhetoric that claims that Roe vs. Wade is at risk on a number of fronts - one of these being the pro-life judicial nominations of President Bush. These Senators must know that we believe in the constitutional function of holding a vote on the nominations! This blockade of an integral part of the constitutional process must stop! The American people must voice their discourse, not only regarding the judicial process, but for the benefit of “all future generations”!

We can, however, restore this hope to our nation once again. Isaiah 40:31 says, “They that hope in the Lord will renew their strength, they will soar as with eagles’ wings; They will run and not grow weary, walk and not grow faint.”
