Colachel Tsunami Destruction

When the tsunami occured, many people had gathered on the beach to watch a large ship that was in the harbor. The beach was out on a peninsula, which had a canal separating the people from the mainland. It had only a few walking bridges here and there. Therefore when the wave came, the people were trapped between the sea and the canal. Almost all of the houses on the peninsula were wiped out.

Closer view of the canal. The canal had to be dredged up by cranes to remove debris and possible bodies.

YWAM Disaster relief team member Sam R. by a house badly damaged by the tsunami.

This petrol station which was inland from the canal was wiped out.

In the cleanup a decomposing body was found and disposed of. You can see members of the YWAM team in the background.
