Glenda and Tom Visit Hawai'i

November 2000

So much to tell ... I have been running nonstop since these two hit the island... I wish I had taken a vacation to vaction with them! Glenda and Tom are having too much fun to stop and write to you all, so I will share some of the highligts:

Friday Nite:
Glenda arrives (late) ... we jump right into full talk mode (we are celebrating our birthdays all week !) -- hours and hours of chatting - then a beach walk by full moon, champagne, more talking ... ahhh ... the north shore ... it sets a spell. There is no dawn patrol on Saturday; we wake slowly and continue to talk (are your ears burning?) We finally make it over to Ali'i. Glenda was kind in her report for her column (http://www.pacificwaverider.com/ggcarroll/ ) -- the truth is -- over Glenda arrives (late) ... we jump right into full talk mode (we are the truth is -- overhead crunchers! ... and ... my surfing suffers for my hangover; I paddle out, but don't even consider joining the packed lineup (G-Shock contestents getting in some practice for Sunday?) ... It's a mushy impact zone session for me. Glenda fares better and samples every inside break wave.

Saturday nite -
Keener arrives: 2 hr telephone conversation -- Tom is no santa, more of a sage ...

Sunday -
We all meet! This is a "Chicapalooza" reunion -- plus our first meeting with Keener. We decide on a south shore beach meeting, even though it is a gray, cold, windy, flat-surf day. Jules' husband Steve (still the lurker with the most as points), Tom and I paddle out -- grumbling all the way (plus a yelp from Tom who left a flesh offering on the reef) Glenda and Jules follow a bit later. All of us shiver and one at a time declare, "One wave and we can go in" (dinner, not as points, is on our mind) Still, I have a lovely time - small play waves, silly rides (everyone gets some)and teasing Tom to blushes.

After all the complaints and grumbling and playing, it is hard to leave ... everyone keeps saying, "just one more wave!" ... There is no sunset or moonrise to celebrate, so it is on to the Vietnamese restaurant ... dinner is sumptuous; the company even more so ... rollicking stories and wild laughter ... you would think we had known each other all our lives.

Monday -
On the north shore with Glenda ... and, again, that languid country morning ... waking to the sounds of cocks crowing and waves exploding on the shore. We get out and do a full reconnaissance of the north shore breaks - studying all the sites: Rocky Point, Chuns, Ehukai/Pipeline, Lanikea, VELZYLAND (wow! v-land! ... It is absolutely drop-jaw scary ... the outside set loomed like a mountain range ... the surfers didn't even try to catch the waves till the third or fourth reform - and even then it was double overhead!) We end up at Ali'i -- the G-Shock is on - we watch the competition (and almost get 'star struck' when we see Rabbit Kekai - I want to go say hi, but Glenda notes that he is busy working ... oh yeah, Occy is there somewhere too, and probably a lot of other 'stars' ... but we just like seeing Rabbit).

Monday late Tom shows up and he and I take our (now marathon) conversation out to the beach where we talk and watch "whompers" for hours (that is a whole 'nuther post) Glenda takes off for Ali'i (boundless energy) and gets in a wonderful sunset session. We all end the evening with a Mexican dinner.

Tuesday and today have been good surf days for th two vacationers - they caught up with Bud and are still talking about those adventures. It looks like Friday is the day we can ALL get together - Neal, Bud and the whole crew ... a nice surprise to see everyone at once ... plans are for a surf session, dinner, surf movies ... a 'slumber party' ... the grand finale

... then, Saturday ... sigh ... our two lovely kin leave ...
 ... all pau...
   ... till next year!
