Whitehead Goes Green: Saturday 28 April 2012

Transition Town Whitehead will be organising a Green Fair at Whitehead Community Centre on Saturday 28 April.

Our plan is to promote the benefits of sustainable ‘green’ lifestyles in an engaging and enjoyable way and, certainly, without getting too ‘preachy’ about it all.

We’re planning to have a variety of exhibitors and a series of short talks and films throughout the day, covering Transition Town Whitehead’s campaign themes - energy, food, waste, travel and biodiversity.

These are a few suggested ideas so far...

Energy clinic - answering questions about energy conservation and available grants

Renewable energy - what will work in your home?

Growing your own food - everything from windowsill herbs to greenhouse tomatoes

A Pledge Wall of Green Promises - make your own commitment and pin it up

Skills Market - learn a new green skill: how to make pizza dough, how to sew, beekeeping, rainwater harvesting, cookery demonstrations

Dr Bike - get your bicycle serviced and ready for the road

Measure your carbon footprint (if you dare)

Ethical Fashion swap shop - ‘swishing’ is the new ‘shopping’

Are you ready for an electric car?

Freecycle stall

What’s in the sea beside Blackhead path?

Kids’ stuff - face-painting; mobile-making; flower fairies; story-telling

Music, food, drinks and craic come as standard...

But it’s only going to work if we’ve got people who want to help with the organisation - in advance and on the day. So, two requests...

Tell us what else we could have in the Fair.

Volunteer to help, especially if you have skills or interests that you’d be willing to share with other people at the event. For example, could you lead a cookery demonstration? Can you lead a children’s workshop to make mobiles or something equally attractive? Would you show people how to grow leeks or lettuces? Would you organise a ‘swishing’ catwalk show?

Thanks to the Big Energy Savings Challenge organised by Power NI, we’ve got some funding to organise this event, but we really need some help to make it work. It’s a community gig, you’re part of the community - please help in any way you can.

RSVP and make us an offer.
