Platform 2 at Whitehead railway station collapsed onto the railway line this afternoon, Friday, 26 September 2008, following recent work to upgrade the surface and provide new warning markings. The platform had seemed to be tilting for the past week and on Thursday, cracks appeared in the tarmac, near the edge. The collapse happened late on Friday afternoon, "with a 'Whoosh'", said one witness. Luckily, no trains were at the platform at the time and no-one was injured. Platform 2 has now been closed off and all trains through the station are stopping at platform 1.
