July 14, 2004 AD, Group C1: Teach One Reach One (TORO) Creativity: My name is Janelle Finley and I'll be teaching the creativity class. I believe everyone has his or her own unique voice and opinion. In my class, students will know how to use this voice and do something creative with it. Many troubled children make trouble because they need attention and are not getting it. What my class will teach these troubled children is to take all that negative energy and do something creative with it. Children can write stories, write poems, and create works of art (e.g. drawing, painting, etc.), or use the spoken word. This will keep these children out of trouble and broaden their creative and artistic horizons. Etiquette: Hello. My name is Candace M. Parrot and being an African-American female, I feel that it's my duty to teach young and fertile minds to well paid jobs that we greatly deserve. I will be teaching etiquette that will give them the opportunity to carry their minds, bodies and souls as young ladies and young gentlemen. Mentorship: Hello. I am Matika Nason. I am young, intelligent, creative and unique. TORO is a non-profit organization where young African-Americans teenagers take at intervals of four times a week giving back to the children of our local community. My particular job consists of preparing activities and weekly planning not only am I an Activities coordinator but I am also a mentor. I feel that this non-profit organization will help me ton get a better understanding and feel for younger children. I take my skills that I have and combine them with newer skills. I never knew anyone who excited me more than the experience of seeing children so interested in our program. In conclusion, this will not only benefit me but also our developing children with dignity and respect. Last but no9t least, it will help me to pursue my career in education. Crime Prevention: Hi, my name is Amber Neal and I am the leader and teacher of one of the many classes taught at TORO. The name of this class is Crime Prevention. The main purpose of this class is to provide a safe-haven for at-risk children while teaching them how to stay out of trouble. In this class, we will also focus on bringing gangs together. We strive to unite gangs including: Bloods, Crips, and KUB (Killing Means Business). For the protection for our participants, we provide 24-hour security, metal detectors` black lights, bulletproof vests and much, much more. Our motto is uniting the community. This class also teaches respect, dignity, honor, and most of all unity. Lastly, we provide names for students who feel at-risk along with ample security services. Self-Love: Hello. I'm Whitney Taruer and I'm going to contribute to TORO and the community by teaching students and urban youth about self-love and pride. In THE average African-American community, it seems that a lack of self-respect and self-love is quite evident. Whether it be through promiscuity drug abusing, etc. Moreover, my mission is to help build character in each child, and to show them that they're worthy of life's many treasures. Academics: I'm Treavor T. Hammons. I'll be heading the academics department at Teach One Reach One (TORO). I strive to encourage our youth using their strengths and individual interests as stepping-stones towards scholarly success. During my sessions I'll help them understand that they are capable of conquering any and all obstacles on their journey towards outstanding academic achievement, even tests. They'll be taught strategies for achieving high scores on standardized tests such as the MEAP, Terra Nova, SAT and ACT, as well as any other tests they make take while in school. With perseverance and willing pupils, I am sure this program will become a full-blown success. Introduction: Teach One Reach One (TORO) is an African-American owned, non-profit organization.
