Some advice here..........If you are considering doing a paint job like the one
I put on my car....then this next little section will really be appreciated. If you need
more help than this, then go to this link: ALL MY PAINTED CARS they have some good helps.
If you have not done this sort of thing or maybe just some small projects. Let me warn
you! This is the seventh project car that I have personally done like this.
I have done several others that were just cheap fixer-upppers for someone else.
Although, I am not a professional painter I do know enough about putting on
a paint job like this one. A job like that one is very time consuming, and costly.
It requires patience and attention to detail. In order to get a car ready for a paint job
like mine, here is what you need to do:

1. Fix any dents. rusted area's and get the body good and straight. Remove all or as much chrome as possible; because sometimes rust can hide behind it and eventually ruin the beautiful paint job you put on a year earlier. A little trick here when doing the body putty for filling in small area's. Take a clean cotton rag and place it over the area that you have just finished sanding, (a finish sand), and place your hand palm down on the rag. Move your hand lightly over the area you just finished, (don't apply much pressure), now move your hand back and forth over the area and the cloth will help you to sense if the area is to low or to high. In which case you would need to sand more or add another layer of putty. The cotton cloth will magnify the highness or lowness of the area. I have seen guys bring there cars to shows and they removed all the chrome to make their cars more custom and alot of times they forget that a car is not made up of flat smooth or even square sheet metal. So they put in the putty, but didn't follow the contours from up and down to back and forth. Always in sanding follow the contours of the area you are working within.

2. Remember that even with the most expensive paint you can buy..... it will look no better than the foundation you apply it to. In other words.........get the body dents and blemishes perfect. I have seen people put high dollar paint on cars that were not prepared right and it showed up after all was said and done. On the other hand, I have seen cheap paint used on cars that were prepared right and what a thing of beauty it was.

3. Buy, borrow, or acquire a good gravity fed cup gun. Make sure you spray some before hand to get the best pattern. If you have never used one before the only thing I can tell you is to practice using some really cheap paint on an old hood or trunk lid until you acquire a sound tecnique. Also, buy some books that explain in detail every aspect of the auto painting process, talk to painters and ask questions.

4. Get a well lit and ventilated area with enough room to move around in. Clean it up! Wash the walls, the floor, and get it as dust free as you can. Move your project into that cleaned area. Make sure that you have washed your car good and you have blown the engine clean and covered it. Do not let anyone in and lock it up after you have finished taping the car off. All of this should be done the night before you paint..............Why? because paint day will be just that; PAINTING!!!! Make sure everything else is done before paint day! On paint day.........take and Pre-Cleano the car down with a good anti-lint rag, and make sure someone is there to just help you with various things. They can wipe the car dry after you have used your Pre-Cleano to remove all the grease and oils, (which also would include finger prints). Next, use a good quality tac-cloth and go over the car real good to remove any lint and dust particles. You Probably should have at least 2 or 3 tac-cloths to do the whole car right. Of course there is much more that needs to be said. I have lightly touched upon some key elements, but that is why you should have read those books and asked questions.

5. Now you are ready to mix and paint...........

How about some good old tuneup& engine specifications? I know........if you are going to put performance stuff in your engine, then much of the stock tuneup specifications will not apply. Get some good books on performance building and it will provide some much needed starting points. The thing about perfomance engines is that they are each unique and much time needs to be spent to maximize to the fullest all the changes and take advantage of a really fine tuned machine. Good luck! Here's the stock spec's anyway.
