If Tomorrow Never Comes
If I knew it would be the last time
that I'd see you fall asleep,
I would tuck you in more tightly
and pray the Lord, your soul to keep.
If I knew it would be the last time
that I see you walk out the door,
I would give you a hug and kiss
and call you back for one more.
If I knew it would be the last time
I'd hear your voice lifted up in praise,
I would video tape each action and word,
so I could play them back day after day.
If I knew it would be the last time,
I could spare an extra minute or two
to stop and say "I love you,"
instead of assuming you would KNOW I do.
If I knew it would be the last time
I would be ther to share your day,
well I'm sure you'll have so many more,
so I can let just this one slip away.
For surely there's always tomorrow
to make up for an oversight,
and we always get a second chance
to make everything right
There will always be another day
to say our "I love you's",
and certainly there's anther chance
To say our "Anything I do's?"
But just in case I might be wrong,
and today is all I get,
I'd like to say how much I love you
and I hope we never forget,
Tomorrow is not promised to anyone,
young or old alike,
And today may be the last chance
you get to hold your loved one tight.
So if you're waiting for tomorrow,
why not do it today?
For if tomorrow never comes,
you'll surely regret the day,
That you didn't take that extra time
for a smile, a hug, or a kiss
and you were too busy to grant someone,
what turned out to he their one last wish.
So hold your loved ones close today,
whisper in their ear,
Tell them how much you love them
and that you'll always hold them dear,
Take time to say "I'm sorry," "Please forgive me,"
"Thank You" or "It's Okay."
And if tomorrow never comes,
you'll have no regrets about today.

The Value of a Smile
It costs nothing, yet creates much.
It enriches those who recieve
without impoverishing those who give.
It happens in a flash, but the memory of it
sometimes lasts forever.
No one is so rich he can get along without it,
and no one is so poor
but that he is richer for its benefits.
It creates happiness in the home,
fosters good will in business
and it is the countersign of friends.
It is rest to the weary, daylight to the discouraged,
sunlight to the sad,
and nature's best antidote for trouble.
And if in the hurry and the rush of the day,
You meet someone who is too weary to give you a SMILE-
leave one of yours.
For no one needs a smile so much
as those who have none left to give.

The Cold Within
Six humans sat trapped in happenstance in dark and bitter cold.
Each one possessed a stick of wood, or so the story's told.
Their dying fire in need of logs the first woman held hers back.
For of the faces around the fire, she noticed one was black.
The next man looking across the way saw not one of his church,
And counld't bring himself to give the fire his stick of birch.
The third one sat in tattered clothes, he gave his coat a hitch.
Why should his log be put to use, to warm the idle rich?
The rich man just sat back and thought of the wealth he had in store,
And how to keep what he had earned, from the lazy, shiftless poor.
The black man's face bespoke revenge, as the fire passed from sight.
For all he saw in his stick of wood, was a chance to spite the white.
The last man of this forlorn group did naught except for gain,
Giving only to those who gave, was how he played the game.
The logs held tight in death's still hands, was proof of human sin.
They didn't died from the cold without, they died from the cold within.

How Do You Live Your Dash?
I read of a man who stood to speak
At a funeral of a friend.
He referred to the dates on her tombstone
From the begging...to the end.
He noted that first came her date of birth
And spoke the following date with tears,
But he said what mattered most of all
Was the dash between those years.(1934-1998)
For that dash represents all the time
That she spent her alive on earth...
And now only those who loved her
Know what that little line is worth.
For it matters not, how much we own
The cars...the house...the cash,
What matters most is how we live and love
And how we spend our dash.
So think about this long and hard...
Are there things you'd like to change?
For you never know how much time is left,
That can still be rearranged.
If we could just slow down enough
To consider what's true and real,
And always try to understand
The way other people fee.
And be less quick to anger,
And show appreciation more
And love the people in our lives
Like we've never loved before.
If we treat each other with respect,
And more often wear a smile...
remembering that this special dash,
Might only last a little while.
So, when eulogy's being read
With your life's actions to rehash...
Would you be proud of the things they say
About how we spend our dash?

Separated by such distance,
Yet your letters bring you near;
Through the miles we share a friendship
That's become to me most dear.
Friends through corrispondece only;
Still, your face i need not see
For your soul shines through the pages
Every time you write to me.
You've a special way of writing,
Warming as the shushine rays,
Bringing joy and inspiration,
Letter brightening up my days,
You've enriched my life, my dear one,
And i'm glad God willed we meet,
"Friendship's Road" is that much nicer
Traveling it with one so sweet.
