Eureka Service Unit's Juliette Gordon Low Birthday celebration '99 was held on October 23. It's theme was "Common Threads" and we got to try crafts that Juliette would have played as a young girl. We made yarn dolls, paper dolls, "Daisy" bracelets, profile shadow drawings, and decorated a quilting square to compile into one big Service Unit quilt. Tracy Shapiro, a local spinner/weaver also came and demonstrated how to spin wool into thread on her spinning machines. As a snack we ate the cupcakes that our troops decorated for the cupcake decorating contest. It was a lot of fun and we learned a lot about our founder, Juliette ("Daisy") Gordon Low.

"Make a Difference Day '99": October 23 was the National "Make a Difference Day". Our whole Council collected new and gently used items to donate to children in shelters. The theme was "Shelter the Children" and our troop won the prize for submitting the idea to our council. More rewarding than that, though, was the response we got from the people we asked for donations. With only 2 girls participating (we are getting a late start this year), we were able to collect 2 whole van-loads of items, plus a photo-copier for the shelter itself!!! We learned a lot from this project...how rewarding it is to help others in need, and how generous the people in a community can be when asked. We sincerely thank those who donated to this great cause. Let's keep this going throughout the year and make a difference daily!

"International Festival '98" was the council project for "Thinking Day" in celebration of Lord and Lady Baden-Powell's birthdays. It was a great experience and we learned a lot about other countries. Our troop represented Germany and had a great time making costumes and food for it.

"Women in Construction '98" was held at College of the Redwoods. It is open to the public and encourages girls and their adult female companions to spend the day learning how to fix things around the house... including plumbing, wiring and woodworking. A great time was had by all in attendance.
