After the defeat of Queen Beryl, Serena, Amy, Raye, Lita, Mina, and Darien went back to their normal lives. None of them remembered anything that had happened to them after they became Sailor Scouts (and in Darien's case, he didn't remember being Tuxedo Mask/Prince Darien). Luna and Artemis believed that the threat of evil was truly gone.
One night, something alien arrived in the city. It came crashing down from the sky, impaling itself in a street of downtown Tokyo. Everyone gathered around the area, trying to see what they could. But they found nothing. Whatever had been there wasn't there anymore. Luna and Artemis didn't know what to make of it.
Somewhere else in the city, two alien beings lurked, named Alan and Ann. They changed their appearances, as well as their identities. Nobody was aware of their existence. They rented a room at a local apartment complex, where they watched over the city with a careful eye. They came to Earth in search of energy for their guardian, the Doom Tree. Queen Beryl had told them that Earth was filled with energy, ready for the taking. Alan and Ann sent out their warriors, called the Cardians, to collect the necessary energy for the Doom Tree.
Luna and Artemis were the first ones to become aware of the new presence of evil in the city. They were faced with an important decision: Should they reactivate the Sailor Scouts? The two cats were reluctant to rob the girls' of their lives, so they attempted to handle the situation by themselves. The Cardian proved to be too strong for them to deal with alone, so Luna did the only thing she could. Using the Luna Mind Meld, Luna made Serena, Amy, Raye, Lita, and Mina remember the past. Memories of the Negaverse, the Moon Kingdom, Queen Beryl, Princess Serena, and the Sailor Scouts flooded their minds. The five Sailor Scouts were back, with a new mission: Protect the city from all harm that may come to it. Unfortunately for the Sailor Scouts, Sailor Moon no longer had the Moon Wand, nor the Imperium Silver Crystal. Both items had proven invaluable many times before.
The next day at Serena's school, two new students enrolled. Their names were Alan and Ann Granger, and they were brother and sister. Upon seeing Serena for the first time, Alan became infatuated with her. Later that day, Ann discovered Darien, and she tried everything she could to get him to like her. Serena was busy getting Ann away from Darien, and she was also trying to get him to recall all of his lost memories as well.
However, Serena had more to worry about than Darien. The Cardian threat was greater than anything they had faced before. And to make things worse, Sailor Moon wasn't feeling up to the task! Serena's lack of will to fight led to the defeat of Sailor Moon. Fortunately, the spirit of Princess Serena's mother, Queen Serenity, came to help her fallen daughter. Serena recovered the Imperium Silver Crystal from Queen Serenity. Along with her new Moon Sceptre, Sailor Moon was more powerful than before. The other Scouts became stronger as well, realizing the full extent of their power.
That wasn't the end of it, though. To aid them in their mission, a mysterious stranger came to their rescue--but it wasn't Tuxedo Mask! A man in a white outfit, white cape, and white turban came to the aid of Sailor Moon, much like Tuxedo Mask used to. He was called the Moonlight Knight. He made his entrance with his trademark white rose, appearing and disappearing in the blink of an eye. He encouraged the Scouts to be strong, and to believe in themselves.
Serena thought that Alan and Ann were just two normal teenagers. Luna, Artemis, and the other Scouts thought otherwise. They had a feeling that Alan and Ann weren't everything they said they were. In the end, they were right. Alan and Ann Granger were the two alien beings that had crash-landed in the city some time ago. They used their Cardians to feed their Doom Tree, and didn't attract any attention from anyone.
One day, as an act of goodwill, Serena and Darien visited Alan and Ann at their apartment, thinking that the two "siblings" were sick. Ann used this opprotunity to eliminate Serena from her life. She trapped Serena with the Doom Tree. The Tree's reaction was something that Ann didn't expect. The Tree became angry, and grew to immense proportions. The Doom Tree's mass covered the entire apartment complex. Filled with anger, the Tree also took Darien, Alan, and Ann captive.
The other Sailor Scouts came to the rescue. The four of them proved to be no match for Alan and Ann though. The two aliens easily defeated the Sailor Scouts. Meanwhile, Darien lay on the ground, battered and bruised by the Doom Tree. Serena was in big trouble, because Ann was ready to destroy her! Serena transformed into Sailor Moon, right in front of their eyes! Alan and Ann were surprised to see this, and it made Ann even angrier. Relentlessly, Ann attacked Sailor Moon, trying to tear her away from Darien. Seeing this, Darien came to her aid, taking the attacks that were meant for Sailor Moon. Sailor Moon tried to protect Darien from Ann's wrath, but he was too weak to go on. The Moonlight Knight came to help out, but even he wasn't strong enough to defeat Ann.
Finally, the Doom Tree took things into its own hands. To everyone's surprise, it eliminated Ann. It was about to destroy Alan as well, but Sailor Moon pleaded for all of the violence to end. The Doom Tree relented, and spared Alan's life. Then, it told its own story.
On the Tree's planet of origin, there was once only the Tree and the Ocean. The Tree was lonely for many eons, with nobody to talk to. It decided to give life to a new race of creatures. Many creatures were born from the tree, which pleased the Tree, which at that time was called the Tree of Life. But the peace and harmony didn't last forever. Queen Beryl had long ago turned many of the children of the Tree to the evil side, destroying all of the tranquility that once was. The Tree's children fought each other, trying to keep the Tree's power for themselves. Eventually, the planet became unsuitable to sustain the Tree, and it was forced to leave the war-destroyed planet. Without enough energy, many of the children died, save two. Those two were Alan and Ann. These two children were raised in a world of hate, knowing only the evils that they had witnessed. Eventually, they made their way to Earth, in search of energy to sustain what was no longer the Tree of Life, but what had become the Doom Tree.
The Doom Tree admitted that it had failed in its attempt to raise its children. It needed positive energy to survive; it needed to feel friendship, kindness, and love. But because of the corruption in Alan and Ann's minds, it only received negative energy; violence, jealousy, and hatred. However, the past events taught Alan and Ann about what was missing from their lives. For the first time, they experienced the feeling of true friendship. The Tree could not live with all of the negative energy in it, so it asked Sailor Moon for help. Before dying, the Tree filled Ann with new energy, bringing her back to life. Then, using her Moon Sceptre, Sailor Moon removed all of the negative energy from the Tree. The tree was reborn as a tiny sapling. Seeing this as a second chance, Alan and Ann took the sapling. They left Earth, in search of a new home to live in.
The events that had taken place had their effects on Darien. He regained all of his memories that had been lost after the fight against Queen Beryl. But the attack by Alan, Ann, and the Doom Tree had taken its toll on Darien. He became weaker by the minute. The Moonlight Knight came to his aid. He revealed his identity to Sailor Moon. He was the embodiment of the brave soul of Darien that had been lost after the battle with Beryl. The Moonlight Knight was created to fulfill Darien's destiny in his absence. But after Darien regained his memories, the Knight knew he no longer needed to protect Sailor Moon. He joined with Darien, revitalizing his mind, body, and soul.
Serena and Darien had found each other once again. Life was back to normal once again for Darien, Luna, Artemis, and the Sailor Scouts.
