CURRENT EVENTS ASSIGNMENTS UNITED STATES HSITORY -- Fall, Spring 2006/2007

 

This year students will select articles  from published newspapers, magazines, or other journalist resources on each of the topics listed below that relate to the United States and then write a minimum of two complete well crafted paragraphs about the article.  The articles selected will contain CURRENT news stories(published in the last 30-days, CHECK THE DATE) and come from reputable and regularly published sources. Press releases, and non-print media are not usable and not acceptable. In addition to providing a complete copy of the article itself that clearly states its source and date of publication, students need to provide and in depth analysis that contains the following:

 

--at least one paragraph summarizing the contents of the article.  Student must use there own words and include details and concrete examples from the article.

 

-- at least one paragraph analyzing the impact of such news on then nation and why the student finds the article personally appealing and impactful to themselves.

 

IMPORTANT REMINDERS:

            1. No late work will be accepted: all assignments are due at the beginning of class as you enter the room.

            2. All Current Events analysis must be typed and double spaced.

3. Each assignment will be graded not only on the contents but clarity, organization, style, as well as, grammar/ spelling.

            4. Unless otherwise stated, all articles must be within the United States and its territories.

            5. Ask for assistance if an article cannot be located or if the topic seems unclear.

6. Articles that are out-of-date, articles containing no author, articles containing nothing to do with the topic, or articles not stating its source will receive a "ZERO."

            7. Students may complete one extra Current Events article for an extra ten points to be added to any previous low grade on an article each quarter.

Only four current events will be due in this quarter.

 

1. An article on U. S. government and politics - Due Wednesday, August 23, 2006

 

2. An article on military power and protecting the U. S. from attack - Due Friday, September 8, 2006.

 

3. An article on Presidential powers in the government - Due Tuesday, September 19, 2006.

4. An article that deals with revising history - Due, Wednesday, September 27, 2006.

 

 

2nd Quarter Articles and Due Dates (Five Articles Due)

 

1. Public opinion polls on the current mid-term Congressional elections - Due Friday, October 13, 2006

 

2. An article on the Texas governors race - Due Friday, October 20, 2006.

 

3. An article on the media (television, radio, magazine… so on) coverage of the 2006 elections (state or nation) -  Due Wednesday, November 1, 2006.

 

4. An article on political parties in the nation - Due Tuesday, November 21, 2006.

 

5. An article about the environment- Due Thursday, December 1, 2006.

 

 

3rd Quarter Articles and Due Dates (Five Articles Due)

 

1. An article on Possible 2008 Presidential candidates - Due Friday, January 12, 2007

 

2. An article on the war in Iraq - Due Friday, February 2, 2007.

 

3. An article on a minority in government or any political movement - Due Friday, February 22, 2007.

 

4. An article on a woman in politics or a political movement in the nation - Due Friday, March 2, 2007.

1. An article on immigration in the US - Due Friday, March 23, 2007

 

2. An article on the US and Mexico border - Due Friday, April 5, 2007.

 

3. An article on an issue about Houston politics - Due Tuesday, April 17, 2007.

 

4. An article on the Houston Mayor or mayors office - Due Friday, April 27, 2007.

 

5. An article about a subject of the students choosing - Due Thursday, May 10, 2007.
