Odds & Ends

~~Odds & Ends~~~

Here are some odds that I've lifted from various places on the net or learned from friends. Special Thanks to members of the discussion groups that provided some of these recipes/tip. I'll add more as I find them!

1. Earache Medicine Fill a clean baby-food jar with olive oil and add 2 large cloves of whole, peeled garlic. Seal with a lid and place the jar on a window sill which gets lots of sunlight throughout the day. Let set for 5 days, shaking the jar everyday at least once a day. After five days, remove the cloves of garlic before storing or using the oil for treatment. This can be made ahead of time, particularly during the cold season, and refrigerated for up to 6 months. To treat the infected ear, simply drop mixture (either warmed to body temp or room temperature) into the ears 2-3 times a day for approximately 4 days. This will alleviate the pain until the infection subsides.

2. Hiccups a. Mix 1 t. apple cider vinegar in 1 c. warm water, and drink. b. Put your fingers in your ears for 20 seconds. This short-circuits the nerve that controls hiccuping. c. Slowly drink a glass of water. Swallowing also interrupts the hiccup cycle. d. See your doctor if your hiccups last longer than an hour or if you have frequent bouts.

3. Sunburn a. To soothe sunburn pain, apply undiluted vinegar to the burn. b. Mix 10 oz. Nonfat Dry Milk, 2 T. salt and 25 oz. water in a quart container. Saturate cloth and lay on sunburn 20 minutes. Reapply 3-4 times daily. c. Apply mayonnaise as a skin cream to the burn. d. Grow an Aloe plant in your kitchen to use on burns. Split a leaf and pat the clear, gooey liquid onto the burn.

4. Cucumber Sunburn Lotion Recipe Chop up a cucumber and squeeze out the juice with a lemon-squeezer. Mix juice with a quantity of glycerin and rosewater mixed together in equal parts. Use to treat sunburns.

5. Swimmers Ear Eliminate swimmer’s ear. If you don’t have rubbing alcohol, fill an ear-dropper with Vodka and squeeze a few drops into the ear, then let it drain out.

Can you eat that egg?
By Scott Matthews

If not sure you ought-ter,
then place it in water.
If it lies on its side,
then it's fresh; eat with pride.

After three or four days,
at an angle it lays.
But, it still is a treat,
so go on and eat.

Ten days, stands on end,
in your baking 'twill blend.
'Cause it's definitely edible,
in your baking, incredible.

But, if it floats on the surface,
that egg serves no purpose.
'Cause a floater's a stinker!
Out the back door best fling 'er!
