In August, 1999,
the event all Harley Quinn fans have been waiting for happened!!
YES!! Harley was introduced
into the mainstream comics!!!!!!!!!!! This now makes her an "official"
mainstream character, which means LOTS MORE HARLEY!!
And when we say lots
more we mean LOTS more! Already a whole slew of Harley memorbilia has been
released - cheap marketing ploy perhaps, but Harley Heaven for Harleyites!!!
Anyhoo, to get back to
that point - "Harley Quinn" is the book.Written by number one Harley Guru
Paul Dini, it tells us how Harley met Joker, how she became Harley Quinn,
and explores their fatalistic relationship!!!!! Whilst bearing lotsa similarities
to Mad Love, it is also a different story - a more adult story, unhindered
by the kiddy factor of the animated books!
Now one of my biggest
concerns about them puttin me in with the mainstream dudies was - well
- Mistah J in those big comics is kinda different from my Puddin in the
animated side. He's crazier, meaner,and more unpredictable. What's to say
he wouldn't just lsoe patience with me and bump me off, or kill me in a
fit of boredom? It seemed that fer the both of us to work together, character
traits might have to be changed!
But no! Dini managed
to pull it off fabulously!!I didn't change, and Joker was still pretty
much the evil dangerous deadly dude he's always been *sigh*. Finding himself
beginnin to care for me (awww!!) he does something typically Joker - tries
to kill me!!! Even though I was pretty peeved, he's only gotta say sorry
for me to forgive and forget!!!! The book also shows how Ivy and me meet
up, and hwo she gives me an extra whallop so I fit in with all them juiced
up mainstream folks!!hee hee!!
All in all, "Harley Quinn"
was a brilliant book. It remained true to animated Harley and mainstream
Joker and brought the two of us together beautifully. The more adult edge
makes the exploration of our psychotic (yet blissful!) relationship much
more full and real, and it paves the way for many more brilliant stories!!
