Some Random Thoughts on Living With Korats...

I decided to create this section to share with you a little about the joys and pitfalls of owning a Korat cat.

The first thing that attracted me to Korats is that they are reputed to be hypoallergenic. I have found this to be fairly true. I have never been able to tolerate any other breed of cat but Korats don't seem to aggravate my allergies. The only time I have a hint of discomfort is when they shed slightly a couple of times each year. Otherwise, there is surprisingly little shed from a Korat! If you ever have seen someone covered with cat hair, you will certainly appreciate the Korat difference. I have also read that the Devon Rex cats are hypoallergenic but that breed never appealed to me.

I am a firm believer that two Korats are better than one. A single Korat can develop a "spoiled brat" personality. My Korats are much happier as a pair. The personality change was quite dramatic for our oldest Korat when we acquired her companion. She ceased being so vocal and "nippy". That brings up another point, Korats can be quite strong willed when there is something they want. I let my Korats know in no uncertain terms that biting is not allowed. Of course I never hurt them, but I very clearly tell them "NO BITING!". Anyway, they are quite happy as a pair as you have seen in the photos. They spend a lot of time together and groom each other often.

A quiet household is the best place for a Korat. They are rather sensitive, alert animals and they like a serene home. Sometimes, even a loud sneeze will send Korats scattering! They are strictly indoor cats, also.

The Korats are very alert to their surroundings. Anything new or out of the ordinary will bring their attention. Any new package brought into the house will require their thorough inspection. They have even alerted us when something is amiss. When a bad storm was blowing rain water under our front door, the Korats alerted us and allowed us to prevent any damage. I imagine that they would be very handy to own in their native Thailand for protection from snakes. If any "critters" manage to get into our house, the Korats are aware of it and in the process of hunting them.

We love owning our Korats. This beautiful animal was a late arrival in the USA, not being imported until the late 50's. It seems to me, their popularity will grow as people realize what special, intelligent pets they are. One can only hope that breeders will maintain them in their current form. This is one breed that needs no "improving".
