A Word from Mr. G I am probably the luckiest man in Honolulu. You see my job allows me
to work
with some of the most incredible young people in Hawai'i, namely, the
wonderful young women of Sacred Hearts Academy. On paper, I am their
teacher. But, that is only on paper. You see, not too long ago, I
realized
that I learn much more from them than they do from me. They absolutely
amaze
me with what they are capable of doing. They understand more about
China,
Korea and Japan than seems possible for people still relatively young.
They
can speak knowledgeably of Confucianism, Daoism, Legalism and Bushido.
They
survived learning about the Rape of Nanking, Teishintei, and the
Japanese
occupation of Korea. At the same time, they appreciate the wonderful
poetry
of Li Po and Tu Fu, the emotion and sensitivity of Korean Hwarang and
the
perfected conventions of Japanese Waka and Haiku. Not only do they
appreciate this poetry, they compose their own. Their poetry provides
a
sample of their talent and their heritages and allows candid insight
into the
cultures they represent. They figuratively and literally "connect"
with the
past. They (and I) want to share their achievements with you. I hope
you
will enjoy what they have done as much as I have. I wish you could
meet them
all in person. They would restore your faith in humanity and make you
optimistic about the future.
