proud (dictionary.com) - These adjectives mean characterized by an inflated ego and disdain for what one considers inferior: Proud can suggest justifiable self-satisfaction but often implies conceit: "There is such a thing as a man being too proud to fight" (Woodrow Wilson).
One who is arrogant is overbearingly proud and demands excessive power or consideration: an arrogant and pompous professor, unpopular with students and colleagues alike. Cf. 'haughty'.

The Power Of Pride

Ever since September 11th I have seen an exceptionally large number of flags and patriotic bumper stickers, as I imagine we all have. A big one you may see reads “The Power Of Pride” over a background of an American flag. Sadly, these four words do a remarkable job of describing the attitude of the United States.
Yes, America is a proud country. The problem is that pride blinds us; blinds us to the truth. We see oxy-morons everywhere, such as the above mentioned bumper sticker or billboards that read “No setback will set us back”. No matter what we try to tell ourselves, the scriptures are accurate in stating, “Pride cometh before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall”. America’s turn is not far away, and when her time comes, the prouder she is, the harder she will fall.
Oxy-morons are abundant in this country it seems. However, America’s biggest flaw is the oxy-morons in the everyday lives of her citizens. This country prides its self in the title “The Christian Nation”, and yet she is nothing of the sort. To the contrary, she has gone astray from Yahweh, and she is proud of it.
“Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burned? Can one go upon hot coals and his feet not be burned?... Whoso commiteth adultery... destroyeth his own soul.” (Proverbs 6:26,27,32) America has left the living Elohim in exchange for the elohim (mighty one) of self. She has left marriage vows behind and chosen whoredom; left righteousness and chosen sin instead, committing spiritual adultery against Yahweh.
Recently we have heard words from our president calling for a national day of prayer, but as of yet, America’s leaders fail to realize that “Whoso turneth away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer shall be an abomination.” (Proverbs 28:9)
The solution is clear: “He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy”. (Proverbs 28:13) Sadly, America as become entangled in the net of pride, and as long as she remains in its powerful grasp, to confess would be out of the question. SOURCE
