Iwama style Aikido

O'Sensei Picture from Aikido.com

Aikido is a martial art with a difference. We don't focus on aggressiveness to subdue an opponent but the opposite. We will do as little as possible or at least only use what force is reasonable against an attacker!

I've been training in Aikido only a short time but have been very lucky to meet Senseis Tony Sargeant, Paul McGlone and Hitohiro Saito Sensei the son of legendary Saito Sensei!

Aikido will take everyone on a different path and each path will, though, improve all aspects of one's life.

Aikido was founded by O'Sensei (above) and is now practiced throughout the world. Iwama was O'Sensei's final place of living and many say this was the time his Aikido took on another level. As he got older and less strong, his techniques changed and became more powerful!

Saito Sensei trained under O'Sensei for over 23 years but did not just train from time to time he actually lived right next to the Iwama dojo as O'Sensei gave him a plot of land to build a house on! This gave Saito Sensei an execellent understanding of where O'Sensei wanted Aikido to go and of course an excellent understanding of Aikido techniques and weapons.
There are many different styles of Aikido and Iwama Ryu Aikido has, through Saito Sensei and now Sensei Tony Sargeant, followed O'Sensei's Aikido. So Iwama Aikido is aikido which is closest to O'Senseis aikido. This is something that not many of the different styles can say. This is only my own opinon of Iwama Aikido. I think we must all find the style that suits us and Iwama Ryu Aikido is the aikido which suits me!

O'Sensei wanted more than just the spread of techniques across the world. I think he had a vision that everybody who came or will come to practice Aikido will become aware of a different way to lead one's life. They will become aware that we are all connected throughout the world and so it does not make sense to be aggressive towards each other and to display anger towards each other.
If each and everyone of us can love each other, and not be bogged down and held back by our ego, then we will start to see that we can enjoy life and be happy in any situation that occurs!
