NNN on Jay Leno

(transcribed by me)

Jay: All right. My next guest, 13-year-old figure skater, she was relatively unknown until recently when she stole the show at the U.S. Nationals, winning a silver medal. Please welcome, Naomi Nari Nam.

*clapping*

Jay: Hey, it's nice to meet you.

NNN: You too.

Jay: Now, did you, we were talking back stage, and you told me your favorite actress was---

NNN: Claire Danes.

Jay: Oh, really. That worked out pretty. Did you meet her?

NNN: Yes.

Jay: Oh, okay. Now, what was the movie that you liked that made you...

Naomi: Well, "Romeo and Juliet."

Jay: "Romeo and Juliet." That was a good one. How about a famous male actor.

NNN: Leonardo DiCaprio.

Jay: Oh, Leonardo DiCaprio. the "Titanic" guy. Now, would you have liked him had he not been in the "Titanic"?

NNN
: Yeah. I also liked him in "Romeo and Juliet."

Jay: Oh, "Romeo..." okay, okay, so that's your guy.

NNN: Yeah.

Jay: Now, your full name is Naomi Nari Nam.

NNN: Yes.

Jay: Is Nari a middle name?

NNN: Yes, it is. My sister's name is also Naomi.

Jay: Your sister's name is also Naomi.

NNN: Yup.

Jay: That just makes it easier for your dad -- "Naomi!"

*laughing*

Why would you have the same name? I don't understand.

NNN: My dad just liked it.

Jay: He just liked the name so much.

*lauging*

He named you both the same name.

NNN: Uh-huh.

*laughing*

Jay: I mean, how do you know when he called you which one it is?

NNN: When we're at home, he calls us by our middle names.

Jay: I see. But you both have the same...

NNN: But sometimes he says,  "Naomi -- no, no, Nami, no. Naomis, come."

*laughing*

Steven: Do you have the same middle name?

NNN: No. My sister's name is Naomi Nami Nam and mine's Naomi Nari Nam.

*laughing*
*clapping*

Jay: I think she said that already. Okay, now, you are 13. When did you start skating?

NNN: I started skating when I was 5.

Jay: 5, okay. Now, who taught you to skate?

NNN: Well, I started off roller-skating.

Jay: Yeah.

NNN: And my grandfather was a former speed-skater. He used to skate to school because the roads were icy in North Korea.

Jay: Oh, he would skate to school. When you are 5 is it good to learn from a speed-skater going 90 miles an hour.

NNN: Well, he hadn't skated for a long time. I just wanted to go, so he took me and my whole family.

Jay: All the Naomis.

NNN: Uh-huh. And my grandpa and my dad just took me around the rink once. and from then on, I just loved it and kept going around in circles.

Jay: That was it. You knew right then?

Naomi: Yup.

Jay: Wow, That's pretty amazing. Now, you do, this is something amazing to me. You do a spin. It's 180 spins per minute?

NNN: Revolutions per minute.

Jay: Revolutions per minute?

NNN: Uh-huh.

Jay: I mean, that's like a car. I mean, 180 per minute isn't that twice as many?

NNN: That's twice as fast as the average person would spin.

Jay: 180 a minute?

NNN: Uh-huh.

Jay: Don't you get dizzy?

NNN: No. not at all.

Jay: He's not even spinning, and he's dizzy, look.
*laughing*

Doesn't he look dizzy. Look, he looks all confused. and he's not even turning.

*laughing*

I can't imagine when you stop, you don't have a sense of, "Whoa, where am I?"

NNN: No. 'cause I think you get used to it so much.

Jay: Yeah, how about the first time, did you get dizzy?

NNN: Yeah.

Jay: The first time. Okay. Now, another point of contention. This seems to be an important thing. Your coach says you are 4'9". You say you are...

NNN: 4'11".

Jay: 4'11". There seems to be a discrepancy there.

NNN: I am 4'11".

Jay: You are 4'11".

NNN: Yes.

*laughing*

Jay: Why did he say 4'9"?

NNN: I don't know.

Jay: Don't know, don't know. Okay. Does being small help you spin? Can you spin quicker?

NNN: I think, not at all. because it just depends on how many times you practice it.

Jay: Oh, okay.

NNN: If you do it over and over, you get better.

Jay: The move you are famous for is the "Bielmann?"

NNN: Uh-huh.

Jay: It sounds like a character, like, on "Seinfeld" or something. Do people know what that is? the Bielman? Have you seen this move that she does? Explain what the move, then we'll show the tape.

NNN: You take your foot. and you put it over your head.

Jay: Okay, right there I'm in trouble.

*laughing*

You know, I thought the spinning was hard, No, that seems hard. Steve, can you put your foot over your head?

Steven: I've done that by accident.

*laughing*

Jay: Let's show people. This is amazing. Take a look here. Here she is. Watch this.

*cheering and clapping*

Very good. It doesn't hurt?

Let's talk about Michelle Kwan for a second now. Now, she is, how old is... She's 18. She's like the old lady of the sports. No, I'm teasing. Are you guys friends? You guys are friends?

NNN: Uh-huh.

Jay: Okay. Is it kind of competitive?

NNN: No. I look up to her a lot.

Jay: Yeah, yeah. Didn't her dad work with you a little?

NNN: Yes. He worked on a move with me called "the double axel."

Jay: Yeah.

NNN: Every time I go up to Lake Arrowhead, I go up every weekend, and he's given me some good advice.

Jay: Well, that's very nice. that's good for the sport. Even though you guys are competitors that he takes time out to help you with that. So, okay, you came in second in the nationals. and, didn't they just changed the rule?

NNN: Yeah.

Jay: It's hard to believe you are 13. You seem so poised and everything. You seem like you are 18, 19 years old.

NNN: Thank you.

Jay: But who is it Tara Lipinski? Is that what caused it? She won it at what?

NNN: She won at 14.

Jay: At 14, and they said what? That was too young, and they changed the rule.

NNN: Well, I guess, 'cause she was a jumping person and that, you know, shouldn't...not a maturity person, so...

Jay: I think you know what you mean.

*laughing*

So you can't go to the world championships?

NNN: No.

Jay: So you have to wait until you are 15?

NNN: Uh-huh.

Jay: You can go to the olympics in 2002?

NNN: I'll be old enough then.

Jay: Okay, so you'll be what? What do you have to be in the Olympics? 16?

NNN: Yes.

Jay: Oh, okay. I'm doing the math. Yes, exactly. Well, that's great. and I'm sure you will do well and make us all proud. Congratulations.

NNN: Thank you.

Jay: Wonderful, wonderful to meet you.

NNN: Thank you.

*clapping*

Jay: Naomi Nari Nam. Right there. Be right back right after this.

*cheering and clapping*

"I wish I could just stop time and freeze"

"Look at that position"

"A layback and a Bielmann! Oh Stupendous! What a moment!"
