Born Jewel Kilcher, May 23/1974 in Utah (United States), but spent most of her childhood
in Anchorage, Alaska. She began to sing at the age of 6 and sang along side of her singer/songwriter
parents, Atz Kilcher and Nedra Carroll in local Eskimo villages and tourist attractions. When
Jewel was 8 years old her parents divorced and she and her 2 brothers stayed with their
father. They moved to Homer, Alaska where they lived on a 800 acre hobby farm.
She toured with her father for the next 7 years, where she mastered the fine art of yodeling.
Jewel as a teenage moved to Michigan to attend Interlochen Fine Arts Academy, where
she began to write her first song. After she graduated she joined her mother in San Diego
and suffering through a series of short lived day jobs she decided to flee the 9-5
world and took up residence in her van. She spent most of her days concentrating on her
career in music, writing songs and poetry.
Jewels first regular gig was at the Interchange, a coffee house in Pacific Beach. The word quickly
spread and by 1993 she was the subject of a rabid local cult following. She signed with Atlantic
Records in early 1995 and issued her debut LP *Pieces of You* It was a slow starter and didn't
even break in the billboard pop charts until some 14 months after its release. The single *Who Will
Save Your Soul* became a major hit and soon the Album became a best seller as well.
