This spell was developed by Una Haveres, a fighter turned mage from Cormyr.
By means of this spell the caster causes a flurry of crossbow bolts to erupt from an already existing crossbow within his range. The crossbow bolts fly in all directions, hitting everything in the area of effect, including the caster (if he is in the area of effect), and causing 1d3+1 points of damage per level, to a maximum of 8d3+8.
Unlike the higher-level spell fireball, the magic crossbow bolts is completely contained within its area of effect. Obstructions and low ceilings do not cause the flurry of crossbow bolts to rebound and fly out of the area—they merely bounce off, break or stick into the walls. These bolts are considered normal missiles for the purposes when determining the effects of protection spells, yet they are still spell-born and thus can strike creatures immune to normal weapons.
This spell is useful on the battlefield, when you do not know the dimensions of the area or against multiple targets.
