This strange item appears as a mercurial metal belt, seamless and liquid in appearance. It can be mentally commanded, or willed, to thin out and crawl across the wearer’s torso and become a plate mail breast plate. In addition with practice the wearer can learn to better control this power, adding details to the armor and allowing the belt to form pouches and spaces to hold or grip equipment as necessary for the wearer. In either form the living steel breast plate weighs a hefty 25 pounds.
Once in the breast plate form this item is considered to be piecemeal armor and adds a +3 bonus to the wearer’s Armor Class; or if the wearer already has an AC better than this, the living steel breast plate instead only grants and additional +1 bonus to the wearer’s AC.
Also, regardless of any damage done to the armor it will seal back up unharmed, regenerating itself and fixing itself as per a permanent mending spell; however, if a significant amount of its substance is destroyed, the living steel breast plate will need to be “fed” more metal to once again regain its mass.
