By calling out this spell, the priest rouses the attention of fantastic creatures in the area of affect. These creatures can be griffons, hippogriffs, rocs, and even dragons. Although the similar spells (animal summoning I to animal summoning III) actually summon a certain number of hit dice of creatures, this one has no such limit.

For the creatures hearing the call, they are of the mind to make their own decision on whether or not to answer the call, but the following factors apply:

  • Alignment Similarity, Difference, or Impartiality: If a caster of similar, or same alignment calls a creature, curiosity will overwhelm them, and they will arrive by the fastest means possible. If a creature is of a neutral alignment to the caster, curiosity will be piqued, and they will arrive when they are ready. Estimate arrival at normal movement. If creature is of an opposite, or generally opposed alignment to the caster, they will disregard the call. (Although, there is a 5% chance they will check it out.)

  • Level of Caster: If the caster's level is less than the Hit Dice of the creature, they disregard the call as a needless cry for help, but curiosity my have them check it out. If the caster's levels are equal to the HD of the creature it will go to the caster, and regard the situation as a necessity to attend to. If the caster's level is greater than the HD of the creature, it will arrive by the fastest means possible, and regard the caster as a friend, or even a master upon arriving.

  • Recognition: If the creature has dealt with the caster in the past (and the results were favorable for the creature), it will come to the caster in the fastest means necessary and regard the caster as a friend. If the creature has dealt with the caster in the past (and the results were detrimental), the creature will arrive and may exact revenge on the caster (dependant upon DM's discretion). If the creature has not dealt with the caster in the past, this category need not apply.

The response or non-response is entirely up to the DM based on the above information. Fastest means necessary often is maximum movement rate, but for spell casting creatures (dragons and such) they often use teleport, or scry to find the caster, and then teleport without error to his location. Also, the caster need not command these creatures (although some may wait until commanded) and can act based on the scenario when they arrive. If in a non-combative environment, they will arrive to the caster and inquire to their summoning.

    Notes: Very rare spell.
