Dark Pulse III — Drow
(Conjuration, Evocation)
Level: 3
Range: 10 yds./level
Components: V, S, M
Duration: Special
Casting Time: 3
Area of Effect: 1 creature
Saving Throw: None
This spell is very similar to the magic missile spell, as it unerringly strikes its target. It creates a jet-black bolt of energy from the Negative Material Plane, which causes 1d4+1 damage per 2 levels of the caster (to a maximum of 5d4+5 at 9th level). In addition, the caster can have the damage occur instantaneously, or on a round by round basis (commonly used against enemy spellcasters). For example, a 7th-level mage could have his dark pulse cause 3d4+3 damage all at once or have it deal 1d4+1 damage each round, for a total of 3 rounds. The last use will prevent most spellcasters from casting spells while they are suffering damage. Unlike the magic missile spell, a dark pulse is not stopped by a shield spell.
The material component for this spell is a shred of flesh from an undead creature.
Notes: Restricted to drow; uncommon for Deathsingers, otherwise rare.
